I’m a data scientist. Any recommendations on what to ask when interviewing product manager candidates?
Design and metric measurement questions.
I like to ask a pretty open ended design question. What they design is not important, but what I need to see is: who are customers, what are their use cases, and how you would build something for that customer. It's simple, but so many people jump right into solving the problem and can't identify users even when prompted.
Imagine if you had to work with a PM for your product, what expectations would have trom him/her? Ask questions based on that. Since you are a data scientist, I am assuming the PM role is for a ML product. So going deep into some ML related questions on past experience or a scenario based question is also recommended. Eg. Uber has info on all the travel routes used by it's customers. How can it leverage this data? Keeping it open ended helps to 1) see creativity 2) see the thought process 3) the learnings from past experience 4) persona selection etc.
