TC 650k, 20+ yoe, PE at Amazon considering Sr Staff at VMWare, is it worth it. Levels.fyi shows VMWare Sr Staff = Amazon L8, how accurate is that?
With so many free containerization options what is the future for VMWare, if docker and kubernetes can power entire cloud platforms then why do companies pay for VMWare?
Because they’re risk-averse, and don’t have the talent to manage open source options. Instead, they fork over a bunch of cash for VMware and it’s shitty UI. Eventually, they get crushed under the licensing costs and move on.
Yeah I guess they will keep milking the customers who got stuck on their platform. Like Oracle and IBM.
If you enjoy the job and it is not a pay cut then yes it’s a progressions. Titles and name of companies don’t matter. Yahoo was the hottest company 5 years ago now it is not.

Vmware was hot 10 years ago. Current work is mostly plumbing work for products that don’t work well together. Engineers move from VMware to Amazon, not from Amazon to VMware. Base pay will be okay, but RSUs will be low.
What was the final decision I am in similar boat
18 yoe and vmware is offering senior staff engineer
What is your level in Apple right now?
I didn't end up moving to VMware. I was tempted for level, but it seems levels.fyi got it wrong. VMware Senior staff is equivalent to L6-7 of Amazon or ICT5 in Apple. That would have been a lateral move for me at the best, overall regression in my career.
wht was the salary VMW offered you?
Okay
You're definitely going to take a paycut
