I have a verbal offer after negotiation. I am not sure whether I will accept the offer or not? Is it fine to ask for a formal offer letter?
Absolutely
I think it’s necessary, not just fine.
You should!
Usually negotiate in person first
Yes you absolutely need to have offer on hand in order to accept the offer. The offer letter is the official “on paper” offer. Make sure it covers everything from compensation to start date.
They just want to know that it's worth their time writing up the doc.
Definitely. But if they cannot give it to you, you can do a tentative verbal acceptance subject to change when you see the official offer. Sometimes things get said that dont make it in the letter and you get screwed.
This. You don’t know them. They can screw you without legal consequences for them.
I have been told one bonus and stock amount and seen another in the offer letter. I have heard new hires promised sponsorship and seen it forgotten, apparently not in the offer letter.
