Is it ok to ask for 1 week off after joining work?

I will be soon joining Salesforce after 3 months delay due to h1b transfer. My wife has a work travel for a week 1 month after I join. We have 2 year old son who goes to daycare. For the week my wife will be travelling, it will be very difficult for me to manage alone. Is it ok if I ask for the week off or should I rather work from home as much as I can on a reduced load? I am not usually good at talking about these stuff as I fear it will negatively impact my career/job. What do you suggest? I am concerned and just had a big argument with my wife. She said that I shy away from diificult situations/conversations and that’s the reason i lost my previous job. Please help me understand. @salesforce thanks

Its very normal scenario. Any reasonable mgr should understand it.

Just be honest with your new boss. Let them know this was already planned before accepting an offer and you need the week off. Most bosses understand that life happens, just communicate.

Salesforce encourages WFH, but that aside, it's your child too, right? You need to take responsibility as much your wife does in taking care of the kid. If you had to leave for a week for work, how would she handle the kid and her job?

Whiile they might understand, I would suggest the work from home angle rather than a week off. It is probably ok to ask for time off, but it might send the wrong signal at a point where you probably have not built any work "equity" yet

I think it’s reasonable to ask and any manager would allow you to take time off. I am taking myself a month off and my new manager was all fine with it (this was planned and I had told during my interview itself. Later after receiving offer, I got it in writing)

Dont. They believe in your abilities thats why they hired you. You should atleast wait for 2-3 months before taking any vacation. That way you can prove your work ethics and their faith in hiring you. Taking vacation so early comes off as casual and lax

Totally fine man. Be confident and communicate to manager as early as possible.

No body is boss here. We both are equal and can disagree with the other.

I understand it could be hard. Your kid goes to daycare full day? In that case go to office late and come early. Finish your meetings and work during the day. Your team will understand. If its half day daycare, try to get him full day this week.

Dunno man, I had similar situation and was no issue. My kid is pretty nice and easy to handle. He was reading books and playing with his toys while I worked. Had to leave earlier from work to pick him up but manager was okay with it
