E.g. Software Developer of the same Level are paid about the same in Germany. However the living cost in Munich is twice as high as Berlin. And in the end it’s what you have in your Hand and can save that counts not TC when you have to spend nearly everything for food and renting
TC?
Total compensation
Or gtfo
Yes, but most just assume Bay Area unless told otherwise
If you don’t work in the Bay Area do you even code, bro? (Not in Bay Area)
I hate the idea of CoL being a multiplier. It isn’t, it’s different base costs. 450 TC in the bay is worth approx 400 TC in a cheaper east coast city. Not 225.
This is true for a single unsettled 20 year old but those costs do multiply when you factor in the costs of settling down and starting a family. Home ownership, daycare, education, etc.
We should do something like TC (COL index), there have also been suggestions or using a more complicated formula for TC that takes into account dependents, stock value estimates etc
Lol. Then everyone will lie, instead of just most people.
Why would that be a bigger reason to lie?
TC should be the same regardless of location (assuming same country). It’s a line item expense for the company and they should be willing to pay it regardless of where you work—even if you work from home. It’s compensation for the value you provide, not your personal quality of life. Coding is inherently not tied to being in a specific location, unlike for example firefighting.
Granted, many companies force it to be tied to a specific location.
^ every company*
Yea I totally agree. It should be taken into consideration.
