Koreans only - do Koreans go to study at college in China or US?

European guy was commenting that Korean student enrollment in Chinese college is similar to Korean student enrollment in US college, especially for top level students. I find it hard to believe but there could have been recent development. As a Korean myself, I can name 100s who studied at US colleges but know only one person (who did undergrad in Korea but went to China for studying Chinese law). To clarify I am asking about students who actually are working to get the degree, not language school. I will be shocked if this generation started going to study in Chinese colleges more including graduate schools. Daewon foreign language high school for example used to send like 50 to ivy league and no one to China. Is it not the case any longer? I could not even find any one asking about how to study in China for graduate study in my alma mater group though I see hundreds of questions about US and Europe. Please comment for the link that shows this stat. This same person also argues that young Koreans are leaving for China in droves as it has better career prospects but I thought Koreans prefer going to US, Canada, Europe and Australia? Another point I think is common sense (please feel free to comment) but this guy doesnโ€™t believe: Many Koreans send their kids to South East Asian countries for English such as Philippines. I also believe most of Koreans believe urban Chinese cities have worse air quality than Seoul. This is one of important factors when my Korean friends are allocated to China as they fear for their babies health. In fact, isnโ€™t it true Seoul is much better city to live in than urban Chinese cities in terms of safety and healthcare or even career perspectives for Koreans? I think this European guy is commenting without any understanding about these two countries but he sounds very confident. Is there any recent developments I missed about Korea? Found bottom link. It says the number surpassed for China but only 30% are for degree while in US it is 80% (rest are language school). So I think the ratio is 3:8 and US still has more students for getting the degree. https://www.google.com/amp/m.chosun.com/news/article.amp.html%3fsname=news&contid=2016111400253

The Southeast Asia thing you were commenting is definitely true. Specially Malaysia AFAIK. Itโ€™s quite a trend in Japan as well. They even send housewife and kids to live in gated communities in Malaysia while the husband works in Japan or Korea. Pretty messed up in my opinion of the only gain is being more proficient in English. Because they live in gated communities and are transported to a from school, they actually meet only Japanese/Korean people.

I donโ€™t have the answer to your question. Just wanted to point out that the Koreans who attended Chinese colleges didnโ€™t necessarily finish high school in Korea. Many of them grew up in cities like Beijing (as opposed to having been sent to China by Daewon high school).

Why donโ€™t you ask the european guy to cite his sources?

there are a lot of korean students in china, many of them just want to escape from military service. i see much more korean students in china than US. oh, and seoul is hundreds mile away from Beijing, the air quality isnt better. hong kong is much better

Are you Korean? This must be very new trend. I know hundreds of friends studied in US colleges and grad schools. Only know a single one in China and he actually did undergrad in Korea. I know a few who study at international schools in China but none of them plan to go to college in China. They want to go to Hongkong or Singapore at minimum.

There were armys of Korean students studying in Beijing when I studied abroad there (crowding up Propaganda), but I got the sense they werent the top students.

I've heard of increasing numbers of Korean expat families with children growing up in cities like Beijing and Shanghai (one of my previous teammates). Many attend international schools (like most expats in most countries) and probably some stick around for college as well. Can't quantify for you though.

Official numbers from south korean government - http://www.moe.go.kr/boardCnts/fileDown.do?m=040103&s=moe&fileSeq=a81095430caa0593ec0314688f573e75 Korean students in ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ outnumbered those in ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Yeah but most of students in China are there to learn language in short term language academy, not as a college student. The stat says only 30% are actually enrolled compared to 80% in US. Many Koreans go to China for international school where they actually speak English as primary language. College enrollment will be far less.

Why make the claim about Korean students in China if you donโ€™t know any?
