Do you find this annoying? I am waiting in line for 15+ minutes. There is these people merge in the very end. What should I say? I have to yield especially it’s big company bus

Merging at the very end is the most efficient way of driving.

This is the right way of merging. Take up all the space on the available lane and merge when this lane ends. Early mergers kill it for everyone esle by creating more friction than needed.

I don't think so, if the single lane backs up too far it starts interfering with traffic at previous exits and causes gridlock. By having cars going to the exit use multiple lane you compress the traffic and this results in less gridlock by keeping the impact away from other exits

If the single lane backs up too far it will interfere with traffic that isn’t exiting, yes, but most situations where someone is trying to enter that lane at the last second at the front of the line, it is already backed up and interfering with the non-exiting traffic. So, the person trying to enter at the last second is increasing traffic impediment for the non-exiting traffic because people who are stuck in the right lane (non-exit lane) exit backup who would then be able to continue on their way after the exiting cars reached a point where they could enter the exit lane have to stop again behind some dumbass who is trying to jump the line at the last moment.

If the backup at one exit is so consistently bad that it screws up traffic at preceding exits, whoever designed the freeway or whoever timed the lights at the intersection after the exit screwed up.

Note too that I am not arguing against double exit lanes that merge into a zipper, I’m only talking about people who try to jump the line really late by staying in a non-exit lane until right before the exit despite traffic being backed up at that exit.

And I'm saying those people reduce traffic jams by preventing the traffic in the exit lanes from backing up further.

... which doesn’t matter unless the exit has a backup to the prior exit like a mile away which doesn’t really ever happen.

It’s an alpha vs beta debate. Beta’s will continue to debate the ethics of it, while the aplhas (like me) will continue to do it and ignore everything from the beta debate.

Bay area traffic is getting worse day by day... people drive crazy because they are getting late by 2 min for kids class. They dont understand the implications if someone is hurt even minor

Don’t be jealous. Just let them in...they are merging. They shouldn’t have to merge at the end of the line.

Google an article about the zipper merge. Smart people say it’s actually the best way to go. I agree it’s annoying

It’s already been studied and proven. Use the merge lane until the end, then zipper.

    Shoreline exit?
I suggest you take the advantage of working at Google and avoid the disadvantage by going to work around 11am.

Since Google dinner starts 6:30 you might finish it the leave.
Or leave maybe 5. Anyway you face the traffic but at least evening traffic is still better than shoreline off ramp.

    • Roku @roku
So people regularly come in at 11 and leave at five?

Late merging aka zipper merge makes the most efficient use of road capacity and is proven to reduce traffic jams.
