I got let go for no reason after 7 months of employment with the county. I filed a complaint with the union and turns out they are at fault for not letting me go the right way. Should I get a lawyer? Or just take the payout from the time the let me go til now?
Huh, I thought unions are supposed to cover the legal stuff
Unions cover their ass and that's it. Just take a look at Detroit, union central, but total wasteland.
🤦♂️
Union is offering me 3months of missed pay. You think that’s reasonable accommodation for being let go for no reason. What would you do?
First, what State? Second, the Union isn’t offering you anything your Employer is offering it. The Union Lawyers are negotiating with them on your behalf. Third, the payment is not for “letting you go for no reason” but because you were let go in a way that did not follow previously agreed upon process between the Union and the Employer for terminating Union members. Fourth, you were going to be let go regardless the Employer just didn’t follow the process properly. Yes get yourself a lawyer to understand completely the situation, your legal rights, and making the best discussion for yourself. This is not legal advice and should not be taken as such. This is only a matter of my opinion.
Only 3 months... Then go for lawyer and see if you could maximize the shit out
Was it a government job? I thought there is no layoff in govt job.
Yes, I guess the county is considered government. I came to work, at the end of my shift they gave me a sheet and said you are being let go. No reason attached.
So sorry. Was it software developer position? Full time job?
What state are you in? In most states employers don’t need a reason to let you go. What illegal reason do you think you were let go for?
No reason stated. The union rep had declared the county at fault. In California.
CA is an at will state. That means you can be let go for any reason or no reason at all as long as they aren’t discriminating against you due to race, gender, etc. Unless you can prove that, a lawyer won’t do much good. Be grateful for the 3 months severance :)
It’s an at will state. You may want to hire a lawyer. That lawyer can advise you properly. Talking about it on her could cause legal issues for you. Best to not say anything, and hire a lawyer.
The lawyer isn’t going to tell you anything useful. Take the severance and unemployment and move on
Most states are at-will employment states which means you can be let go for no reason at all. Unions, provide some negotiated protections against this. If you did not have a union you have no recourse. Even with a lawyer the best you will get is whatever negotiated settlement a breach of union negioted terms calls for. Maybe a tiny bit more with an awesome lawyer (who will promptly overcharge you) Many on here have downed the Koolaid that unions are evil. Works out great for your employers, tho. Why bargain with your freaking employees. Don’t @ me on this. Send your myopic rebuttal to whoever cares
Take payout and chill
