Looking for some advice.

Verizon / Eng VZemployee
Jul 14, 2017 11 Comments

I'm currently in OPS/ENG but reading these posts the past couple days has me reevaluating my job. I have stuck with Verizon because of the health benefits for my family and the job security in my field. Job security, for me, comes before salary. I make around 65k, with 3% annual raise and 10% annual bonus. Been with the company almost 10 yrs. I have no college degree but I am starting school in August, paid for by VZ.

What should I get a degree in that pays well, has job openings :: esp in the future, and most importantly, job security?

Keep in mind I work full time with a family of 5 so it will be a few yrs before my education is complete.

Thanks.

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. They're going to be the big, big fields for years to come. A math minor is especially valuable with either of those degrees as both involve a lot of applied mathematics

65 without an IT skill isn't bad. Take some aws classes.

For me, just being in The Bay Area is job security enough. If one company goes under or you lose your job for whatever reason there's hundreds more you can get a job at in tech. Personally I put salary above job security but I can understand your position having a family to look after. Any field that encourages you to code or make things worth money is a good degree. Agree with the suggestions of data science, math and AI. You'll need a good amount of determination to stick with it so be prepared for a challenge. BTW some tech companies give you health coverage for even your dependants.

I would just skip the college in this field. College is only going to delay your growth. I work with plenty of Network Engineers who make 120k with no degree. And I work with several people contracting as Network Engineers who make 200k a year (they do it by working 60 hours a week and getting overtime but 60 hours a week isn't really that much). While a lot of the people I know who do have college degrees are making the same amount except they are 4 to 6 years older and have a lot more debt. Go to college if you want to be a doctor or lawyer but these days, you don't really need college for much else. Experience is king and you sound like you have plenty of it. Thats just my opinion.

And the people I'm talking about with 120 to 200k a year have about 6 to 8 years experience.

right now I'm a field engineer, love the job, but wouldn't mind a bigger paycheck. I'm good with technology but no, I wouldn't say I have a specific skill set in coding or anything.

Anything related to IT or IoT is where we are headed. There are endless opportunities in these areas in many different departments. If you have the knowledge plus the experience behind it then you can write your own ticket. Job stability is very easy to come by and the salary will have you close to $80k-$100k in the first year and only goes up from there. With Verizon there are so many options for this, especially if you live near a VZ campus or regional office.
