I have around 15 yrs of experience in application programming . Currently doing MS in ML and plan to complete by 2020 May . I am a US Citizen . Other than FAANG which companies hire ML or DS in Bay Area ? Also what is the pay for ML engineer and Data Scientist roles ? I just started working on GitHub to develop my portfolio and kaggle Also which job sites are better for ML and DS ? Any tips and advise helps . Thanks :)
How about the opportunities ? Is it easy to move into ML/DS with a masters ? I am spending a quite decent amount of money on the masters and also lot of time ? Literally the whole weekend is gone on the assignments ..is it worth ?
Yeah the demand is still high. You can find roles at a wide range of companies, but you should understand that the responsibilities tend to differ based on size of the company. At FANG, you work on very small part of the overall pipeline - usually A/B testing and metrics/analytics. At medium sized company you usually are writing model code/inventing new algorithms/implementing things from research papers, as well as A/B testing them. At small companies and startups you will have to handle all of that + data engineering, and maybe even help with deployments/production SWE work. Imo, your background in app development could be very valuable in combination with ML. Perhaps you will have an easy time building proof of concepts with user interfaces - which can really speed things up and improve reception of your ideas.

unless you are really at the top of your field (ML), pay is same as a regular SWE. A lot of ML/DS work is being automated or atleast that is what the major cloud providers are trying.
AutoML is just vaporware to up sell compute hours at this point. Pay comment is correct, give or take 20% depending on company.
Agree, which is why I said they are still trying, but definitely there is a trend towards regular backend engineers picking up ML instead of dedicated DS hires coming in from Analytics side.
