I left MSFT in the Ballmer days and been with Expedia for a few years, I'm now considering going back because I hear the culture in MS has shifted(positively) since Satya took over. I like the WLB at EXPE and the travel perks, but management is broken beyond repair, I have seen solid, hardworking devs being shit on while these nothing people get promoted. Has MSFT culture really gotten better or am I just suffering from the 'Other side is greener' syndrome?
Totally depends on teams. But majorly it's really good if work life balance is concerned.
What are the travel benefits?
Travel stipend $250-750 per year, discounted hotels (minimum 20% off, up to 70 for some chains on specific dates), random flight vouchers if you look for them
Few of my friends returned to MSF as well, they love it.
You wouldn’t be the only one... https://www.seattletimes.com/business/microsoft/more-boomerang-employees-return-to-microsoft-as-corporate-culture-shifts/ Having hung on through the Ballmer year and seeing Satya take over for the last few the company culture is very different. There’s still pockets, so as always was true pick your team/org carefully, but I would say it’s much better and WLB is good.
At a company this large, there are going to be holdouts. Do your homework on the team you want to join. As negative as MSFT blind is about Satya, he pushed the company direction towards the cloud. There is still a lot of fat (blind has a lot of threads on rolling RIFs) and the culture hasn’t completely changed. But there are those of us who are trying.
Msft is doing well. Do it
Expe -> Msft is a no brainer today.
