Microsoft

Hi I have an informational interview for a non engineer role at Microsoft. A recruiter called me and said a hiring manager found my resume and wants to talk so we're meeting for coffee. I'm in a specialized ops role. Does anyone know if this is normal practice for Microsoft? What can I expect?

I don't know what your role is but your interview questions would be change acording to position. Just I can say something about my first that recuiter had tried to understand what I have done as job before and also, my behaviour, attitudes etc. And i had taken some sales related questions...

Thanks. Just seemed odd. I didnt apply to the role and I haven't had a recruiter contact me to set me up for a coffee meetup directly with the HM before.

I have heard of a similar interview experience of a Microsoft employee but it wasn't external hire, instead an internal transfer. Not sure if this helps. Also, sorry to see you have not got any helpful responses above. They don't make sense at all.

I had an informational at Microsoft before joining. It’s more relaxed and a lot less paperwork. I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s just coffee.

Informationals are pretty normal at MSFT. Just enjoy meeting with the HM and get to know him/her better and understand the work/team. Then if it’s a mutual fit you’ll get looped for sure and have a bit more of a chance for success IMO vs. a cold sight unseen applicant.

Hi, did you mean "informal"? Thanks for the response!

Microsoft Bill_G8s Jun 3, 2018

No prob. No I meant informational. These casual, informal meetings are referred to as “informationals” which might be sort of a MSFT thing I’m not sure.

The problem with informationals at Microsoft is they are steeped in bias. Most larger companies such as Amazon or Google have standardized hiring practices and start with phone screens, where at Microsoft if the informational interviewer doesn’t like the look of you it can be game over. Plus MSFT recruiters are useless.

The role your interviewing for is probably customer facing and they probably want to see how you act in that type of situation.
