I always thought my income was middle class, but according to this article, I am upper class (>190K TC) https://sf.curbed.com/platform/amp/2019/2/25/18239828/report-middle-class-income-ranges-sf-bay-area-salary TC 265 YoE 4
IMO class should be defined by how much you spend, not how much you make. if you make 265 and save nothing then that's definitely a pretty lavish lifestyle even for SF
Yep upper class TC != smart with money
I’m BPL
$70k household in SF is qualified as middle class. That’s a tough life.
They pay rent then the rest on food banks..
Money can't buy class.
192K income, after tax is ~130K, after various expenses you have maybe 80K. House costs 1.2M which is 15 years worth of savings. You are a middle class who will work most of your career just for a house.
Just not true... that's living in a bubble. Middle class makes much less and has to deal with all that shit. I suggest reading up a bit on who the real middle class is
That 1.2M house is over half the pre-tax lifetime earnings of a middle class person. I don't know why you complain, you decided that your priority is to own a very nice house. Some would argue that is a waste of time and effort
That's you by yourself though. And that study is by household. If you're making 265k by yourself and your significant other makes only half that, you're looking at 400k for a household. That's probably going to push you into the uppermost limits of middle class. Alternately, if your TC is such that your significant other can be stay at home (and not because daycare is more than their salary) and you don't need dual income, that probably also puts you at absolute top of middle class.
Upper class is reserved for celebrities, CEOs, and tech billionaires. You’re a guy earning a decent salary, nothing more.
I suggest people on this thread do a bit of research before saying they are middle class... For someone to enter the top 10% of personal income in the US they need to earn at least 75k. The top 5% is roughly 100k+. Looking at households (instead of personal income) the thresholds are 118k and 162k respectively. Does anyone here seriously thinks that being in a comfortable spot in the top 5% is middle class??
Which country?
I almost broke my hand once face-palming at a claim that 200k is to small to be called "middle class". Because, you know, all money is spent on mortgage, private schools, twice a year vacation abroad, and fancy cars, leaving very little disposable income.
Why does it make sense to compare TC without looking at cost of living? Walmart cashier in the US makes more than most folks in the world. Does not make him/her middle or whatever class...
get a life bro
This. Find something else to do than measure class
Thanks for the suggestion. I have a lot of random thoughts each day and this is one of 1000 thoughts :)
