Msft vs Google offer help

Google’s location is bay area and msft is seattle. I have close to 6 years of experience, I work near LA. I need to relocate for either of them. Considering housing market, work and wife’s preferences, I am planning to pursue microsoft.

Microsoft told its Sr. SDE(mostly 63) in azure core team. Can some one please throw some light on numbers to be asked for. It would be of great help. They projected the following:

Base 165k.
Stock: 120k/4 years.
Joining bonus: 40k
Relocation 12.5k cheque.

google’s initial offer is less and are asking for msft numbers.
What is the best offer for microsoft and how much could be asked ?

Google will beat anything msft offers. Plus google has stock refresh which is around 100k a year while Microsoft refresh is just pathetic. Google for sure.

Just moved from Microsoft to Google myself, but I strongly recommend you take a Seattle area job over the bay. Your dollars go about 30% farther in Seattle—and imho it's just a nicer place to live.

That’s a very reasonable offer for sr, might even be L64. You may be able to get a little more in terms of stock and signing bonus, but if you have a counter. Tell google your msft offer, they’ll beat it. And then tell msft your google offer and let them fight each other.

Do NOT tell Google about your Microsoft offer. Let Google come up with their offer and it is extremely unlikely to be less than Microsoft's. It is more likely to be substantially higher than Microsoft's. But if you share Microsoft offer numbers, they will simply match it 10-20% higher. Get Google to come up with their number independently first.

Not exactly, when I told I had another offer they said let them know the offer and they will take it from there. I am interested in msft, so not thinking much about google.

Not a bad offer but new Tableau senior devs are given 5,000 RSUs or a bit more than 400k (at today's stock price) over 4 years. Annual stock refreshers are also about 3x of Microsoft. On the other hand, Microsoft target bonus is higher than Tableau and they also have better benefits (like an awesome 401k match)

Also, Microsoft stock is a bit more stable I reckon.

Sure, but when you get 3x more stocks, you can deal with more volatility :)

I just left goog for MSFT. Seattle way better. MSFT increased their offer to get me to leave Google -- use your leverage! I asked them to improve offer twice before I accepted; first offer from MSFT was super low-ball.

Don’t go by initial offer , microsoft refreshers are 5X lower than google , plus google is in Bay Area , lots of future opportunities to grow if you have a google stamp in the resume

Cool thanks for the info. Any idea for L63 where to start from ?
      Mar 2, 2018
    • Microsoft Foobarfoob
Have no idea. But my guess would be at least ask for 250k stock. They would let you know if that's too high.

Google can give you seattle location
Google salary is same for Seattle and the Bay Area

Don’t share microsoft numbers with google. Just decline and ask them to come up with the offer.

They do team matching. In worst case you might have to wait for 3-4 weeks to land a team

I know folls for l63 have gotten 250k in stocks and 75k sign on. Try to ask for more

Yeah, that's a good L64 base. I don't know what's normal for signing bonus/stock, but refreshers at L63 target 15% and $17K/5 years (up to double for top rewards).
    Mar 1, 2018 4
    • Microsoft / Eng ammierting
FWIW L64 target stock is 24 iirc, so there is a difference in earning potential if your recruiter is willing to share exact level

Oh thanks, You mean refresher stocks as part of performance. Is it capped by 17% of your base pay.
      Mar 1, 2018
    • Microsoft / Eng Harmar
Bonus, paid immediately at review time, is target 15% of salary (up to 30%). Stock awards, vesting over five years, is target $17,000 (up to $34,000).
      Mar 1, 2018
  • Microsoft .,
Is that 120K per year or for 4 years? If former then that's a good deal
    Mar 2, 2018 2
    • Microsoft Devmain
OP said 4 years typical for RSU, I don’t think it’s possible 120k per year for msft at L63

Pick Google. You can move to microsoft when you are close to retirement.
    Mar 2, 2018 2
    • Microsoft Lodu
TBH, Google/LinkedIn are better retirement places. More pay and same WLB as msft sleepy orgs. WLB in Azure sucks on top of shitty pay.

I too have an L4 offer.

Unfortunately I have this bad feeling that Microsoft will stink up LinkedIn with bad pay since it's making losses

  • Google razz
At Google, that maps to either L4 or L5. You can expect a target between $250k and $350k total comp. google will also match any offer “out of band” if they really want you
