TC: 500k YOE: 5 Someone asked me in another thread about negotiating tips. The only tactic which worked so far for me: Lying. Lie about your current TC when negotiating a new offer. Everyone is lying to you all the time about all sorts of stuff : Your Manager, Your HR, Your recruiter. They are lying and hiding facts from you to make you feel guilty about leaving / joining. Lies like “We’ll promote you soon” “You’ll get a better TC with a promo”, etc etc Lying definitely has risk associated with it, but without risk there is no reward. I believe the risks are very low. Very rarely does someone asks you to prove your current TC. Your current company won’t fire you if you lie to the new company’s recruiter about your current TC.
Say for instance your current TC is 300k. How much higher would you say your TC is?
Really depends on how high you think the new company can go. I would go with 25% above my current TC
They dont ask about current TC anymore due to CA law. They ask you about expected salary now.
If two offers are similar & both willing to match the other, seems like that is the only way to get one to go higher, at which point it’s a self fulfilling prophesy
Do you also like about competing offers ?
This is kinda obvious to most people I hope... whenever you move companies it should be a 20-30% move in total comp plus relative benefits , right ? That’s what I’ve done to from from 13 / hour in 2011 to 200’s in TC. Imagine being entirely open about 13 an hour when interviewing. Lol good fucking luck
One reason to work at Google is you can claim a ridiculously high current TC at your next negotiation and recruiters will believe you.
Fair point
Wouldn't they know your pay in background check or when you submit pay stubs?
Background checks don’t reveal pay. Why do you need to submit paystubs? If you’re referring to H1 transfer, then that happens only after you accept the offer and only the lawyer looks at it. Recruiter doesn’t care. It’s in their interest that you join so that they get their own bonuses
The do reveal pay if your previous employer was enrolled into The Work Number.
Sometimes the new company will down level you to restrict the negotiation space
I agree with this man. This obsession with being overly honest is silly on many levels. Every relationship involves a degree of deception, always. Thinking otherwise is at best naive.
So are you lying about that $500k TC?
Look at Google stock growth last 3 years.
lol
