Native Americans

Why is there no big push for native Americans in tech like there is with black / Latino Americans?

Facebook YCHk03 Apr 28, 2018

The Cali government literally payed people two months of salary per native man/woman/child killed, and you’re asking why there aren’t many natives in the area?

New
RSWl11 Apr 28, 2018

No, he’s not asking that. Read carefully.

Facebook YCHk03 Apr 28, 2018

I did read carefully. A large “push” for recruitment requires a population to recruit from. You’re taking about a population of people who have been systematically murdered, forcibly sterilized, and had their children removed by “integration” programs that put them into Good White Homes so they’d no longer “be” native.

Probably, they don't form a sufficiently big vote bank so that a political party can throw it's weight behind them and fight for their causes. Tech generally frames policies based on the political atmosphere in the country. If you don't have any significant political presence, the tech industry and even others tend to ignore you

Microsoft blight Apr 28, 2018

Something like that, yes. Though for companies, being a political strategy is not enough, it has to have some impact in the market, if it doesn't move numbers they won't care.

Microsoft’s definition of diversity isn’t very diverse. Native Americans apparently aren’t on their radar as a group they want to invest in. As a Native American myself, I’d love to see Microsoft get more involved in Native communities. How about educational outreach programs to encourage young Native Americans to go into technology? Do any such programs exist? And speaking of diversity, what about diversity in work styles? Microsoft is pushing open space offices on everyone, but not everyone can work effectively in such an environment. This has always really bothered me. Such a narrow definition of diversity.

Unfortunately this is a common problem. Falling into the misc category.

Intel Khanh Jr Apr 28, 2018

Intel counts Native Americans as diverse.

Microsoft Sleestak Apr 28, 2018

I’m guessing you don’t actually mean the natives themselves are diverse. Are you saying Intel actively recruits natives? They have educational outreach programs to get native youth interested in the tech industry? If so, that’s great! I’m questioning the effort (or rather, lack of effort) Microsoft puts into recruiting Native Americans—as compared to other races—into the tech industry to make their workplace even more diverse.

Airbnb ✌️ Apr 28, 2018

Airbnb, Uber and Google have Native American diversity groups.

Microsoft Sleestak Apr 28, 2018

That’s awesome to hear!

VMware yootube Apr 28, 2018

I have zero knowledge about natives except that they helped the pilgrims, the last of the Mohicans was a good movie, and they run the casinos. How many of them are left? Schools don't talk about them nor do the news. It's more than just tech. They are not mentioned much anywhere.

Microsoft Sleestak Apr 28, 2018

Were you born in the US? So your knowledge of Native Americans is based on what Hollywood tells you? That’s pretty darn sad. They have been in the news recently. Have you not heard of the Dakota access pipeline protests? If you truly want to know more about them, do some reading. And I don’t mean fiction. Do you know about reservations and how those came about? Custer’s last stand (Little Big Horn)? How smallpox and other white illnesses wiped out their populations? That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

VMware yootube Apr 28, 2018

1/3 of my knowledge of from Hollywood. We saw last of Mohicans in public school. I read cnn, foxnews, bbc every day, and local news site in a very liberal state. All I'm saying is that any news about natives are minimal. Dakota was on news for a little bit but is completely quiet now on those news channel. I'm not that interested in natives to research about it. Also not interested in black lives matter or metoo but those are all over the news and social media. Nothing about natives except Trump making fun of Elizabeth Warren on being native.

VMware yootube Apr 28, 2018

And no, was not born in the us but did go to public school starting in elementary for many years in one of the states with decent public school test scores. Very little is taught about natives in my public schools.

Revinate JPQ Apr 29, 2018

Small issue due to small population, that also hasn't made any news about wanting a peace of the modern pie. Epitome of marginalized, and no one is looking at the margins. Aren't "latinos" linked to the natives ancestrally. They should join forces.

Deloitte PVaQ48 May 28, 2018

Because there are not many Native Americans left. White Americans killed off most of the Native Americans.

Facebook YCHk03 May 31, 2018

In 2014 the official estimate was 5.2 million.

Deloitte PVaQ48 Jun 13, 2018

5.2 million is not a lot, lol. There are more people in Booklyn than that.
