Netflix job question

Hey Blind,
I recently got an offer from Netflix.

TC: $380k (all but 5% is cash)

A bit about me,

4 YOE in a mix of software eng roles and data eng roles, with my most recent role being at Facebook - IC4 - TC: $190k (with good performance reviews)

I’m kind of floored that Netflix more than doubled my FB TC.

Am I jumping into a job that I’m unqualified for? Or does Netflix just pay insanely well?

I didn’t have a single white board problem.

Everything was very high level and conceptual.

Please, can you give some idea of what the questions were. What high level conceptual question did Netflix ask?

Our interviews are generally very practical. Don’t expect trick questions or brain benders. I had never heard of leetcode until reading through blind posts to find everyone obsessed with it.

Same here: no coding questions during the interviews, no white boarding. All high level questions and questions about past experience. For example, “tell us about a time you improved performance. What was your approach, how did you implement the changes, and what was the result?” I also got questions such as “tell me about a recent disagreement you had with a colleague” obviously meant to weed out “brilliant jerks”. I had also never heard of leetcode before blind.

Netflix wants people who can think for themselves and work well with others.

It is also worth mentioning that you interview for a specific team at Netflix. Each team has their own interviewing style. Your interview experience won’t be the same as mine.

We pay insanely well, no way to know if you are in over your head. At least you'll get 4 months of that in severance if it doesn't work out.

So does Netflix give you all this Cash plus benefits like healthcare etc as well?
      Jun 2, 2018
    • Netflix GYjk06
Yes but it’s a bit cheeky in how it’s handled. The intention is to be true to the culture’s thoughts on comp and the Freedom & Responsibility philosophy.

Netflix gives a stipend to cover benefits so that employees become aware of how much it would cost the company if they hid the amount from you like other companies. If you want to buy benefits beyond the stipend amount, it comes out of your salary.

Same sort of deal with the tech grab cabinets. “Free” iPhone cables and chargers and stuff, but everything displays the price tag so employees know how much it costs.

Curious to know if anyone got let go while on H1B, is the firing immediate with 4 months pay or they keep you in payroll for a little bit ?

Take the job. You got the offer because they know you can do the job. It is common to get nervous before starting a new role/position. You will catch up in no time. Congratulations.

Fake it till you make it. If you only make it half a year you're still half a year ahead of your current comp.

Are you a Data Engineer at Facebook? It's a very good move.

Yep. Got sick of doing SWE work as a DE and getting 1/2 the equity.
And my manager said I’d be down leveled to E3 if I transferred to SWE so I was like, time to find a new job.

Best job offer I got this cycle was to move to a DE role. Ended up turning it down for SWE at a different company, but my general impression is that DE is a hot space and most companies aren't underpaying

Is there a difference in pay between DE and SWE @ Netflix like @ Facebook? What are the differences between the two roles at Netflix , really?

Dang dude, congrats. Work your butt off and crush it.

I was going to say that your FB comp sounds low for E4 but I guess from other comments and the being downleveles to E3, Data Engineers at IC4 are paid less than E4?

Curious about this too - if Netflix pays 4 month of severance for people fired, how does this work for employees on H1b ? Do they go out of status right away - or after 4 months ?
