New boss doesn’t have time to hold my hand

I just started a job about 4.5 weeks ago. The work itself is pretty heavily technical with a lot of weird infrastructure decisions made before I started. I am in the process of learning the ins and outs and in my third week I had a few user stories to be put in sprint. I misunderstood my boss and they weren’t ready for a quite small fix. I apologized and worked on correcting them. In the meantime trying to get information from the boss and they felt they were repeating themselves multiples times with me. Suddenly in the past week they’ve gone cold, ignoring my materials and questions. I’ve tried going thru colleagues but I feel like I’m just divining the maybe possible answer to the issue when my boss has in their mind what they really want. I approached my boss earlier this week in a 1:1 and they responded they don’t have time to hold my hand. The only interaction I’ve really gotten has been during our 1:1s and then there’s nothing for the rest of the week. Now I’m trying to engage and they pretend I’m invisible. I suspect I’m about to be fired. It really hurt to hear they didn’t have time for me. But I understand, I’ve been working for many years and should be self sufficient. But I’m completely lost and don’t know what to do here.

You have a terrible boss. Can you talk to someone senior in the team to understand

I don’t think so.

Which bu? Talk to some peers in your team or in parallel teams. In you're in my bu, I can help a bit

This is the stuff to find out before joining the team. How work is expected to be done is a big deal, some will define for you while others will be "it's up to you, no hand holding, just don't fuck up too big on any one decision early on." The latter is horrifying for people that never gone through it. If you have a direction you want to go in for your work/project, assert it in next 1:1. Either you progress or look for another job/team.

First of all, don't feel guilty. Either this teams hires raw talent and expect them to pick up over time without hand holding, in which case it's natural that u need to go through the process. Or, this team hires people who already have the experience in whatever they need done. In which case they (not you) made a mistake to hire a person with no direct experience in that job. I am impressed with your courage/honesty in writing your post, including the part that teammates are telling you that they feel like they are repeating themselves. You appear to be someone who truly is trying to get into the role. If you have been outstanding engineer in your previous jobs, it's time to move to some other team. Discuss with your manager about change of teams, not apologizing for your skill set, but mentioning that ur working style is to understand system well in first few months before tinkering with it and this teams working style is discouraging u from being an A grade engineer.

Wow, that honestly sucks. I don't have any advice for you that hasn't been said. I'm rooting for you - hope everything works out.

If they don't tell you how they like their coffee, you are free to make it how you want. Just make sure it tastes great.

Are you a fresh grade or you have an experience? If you are a fresh grade, then ask for a mentor... If you have prior experience then also ask for a mentor as well as you should start looking for jobs outside.... In any case, spend extra time understanding the code and architecture to finish your tasks sooner.. don't stop asking questions...
