TC: 360k base + 60k bonus Some $250k RSUs with IPO in 2020 (I am not too positive as it moved from 2018) Role: PMO exec / leadership YOE: 15+ New to blind. But TC discussions here have thrown me into a dilemma. People are talking about 600k+ as a natural number, and I am wondering what I am doing wrong. Aways preferred to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond. But wondering if financially that makes sense unless it's some kick-ass pre-IPO, mine isn't. (although liberty, position and flexibility we get in a smaller pond is unmatched, but cannot ignore the financial aspect though). Wondering if I should try getting into one of the cooler named companies that pays shit load more... Thoughts please?
Interested in knowing the difficulty of this happening for OP who is big fish in small pond. Will they downlevel but increase tc?
Good point. Actually I was contacted by Google a few years ago for a Program Manager role. Somehow I wasn't ready to downgrade my role (at that time). But now I have multiple mortgages so started to evaluate all options.
You literally listed your personal pros and cons. If you leave, you make more money. If you stay, you’re a big fish in a small pond. Why do care wtf blind thinks about it. Just leave to google L7 and become a Blind god
I only have one sided perspective. Never worked for such large companies, so don't know how the other side looks. I am mainly here to get perspectives as I see lot of active people from FAANG and other hot companies.
Never heard of 360K base even for C suite at pre-ipo companies... I’d stay put. Same role at FB would be something like 260K, 80K bonus, 150K annual equity
Thanks. Gives me some perspective into FB packages. What level of freedom is given at leadership roles? How is failure treated? At my current company I experiment with new things, and drop them in 2 quarters if there is no promising ROI... without my management going crazy on me :-).
Totally depends on role and org. Gets down to individual directors and VPs au that level.
600K+ is NOT a natural number! Not a common TC anywhere.
Please see other threads on compensation. Senior engineers making shit ton, and of course most is equity. Equity at my company isn't translating to anything as IPO keeps getting pushed out. So started to wonder why the hell I am containing myself.
Sure I get your point. Just wanted to mention. It’s not that common to get 600K+. A lot of the equity for those TCs that you see are paper money too. Nothing wrong with wanting to yearn for more money though.
Never seen above 600K for non-tech. My boss is a Director at FB and doesn’t touch that
You made my day!!! But on some threads here people are posting super high compensations. What's that all about?
Technical... swe (and engineering mgmt) PM (product mgmt)
Isn't project management considered technical? I may have my bias but I see PM to be an essential aspect for a successful delivery / launch.
First go get an actual offer with higher numbers then come back.
I think I will do that. Was just seeing if it's worth exploring before investing time. Coz few years ago when I explored Program Manager role at Google, the TC offered was some 250k. Pretty upsetting after all the effort, as I wanted to cross 300k at that time. Now my aim is 600k. Even if I land at 550k I am ok.
Interview, then see where you land. For a non-R&D role (eng, design, PM, etc.), $600K seems like a stretch. I’d guess 15 YOE maps to director (~ “L8” if you really care), where you may hit around $500K for a non-tech role. Is that extra bit of money worth the stress? Things get pretty cutthroat at higher levels in most of the companies you’re referring to. As an eng, with that many YOE, you should very easily cross $600K at those companies (should be able to hit $600K as a high “L6” or low “L7”). **Speaking from the experience of an engineer, who would be an L5 at FANG, and makes just over $500K/yr (with a little bit of stock appreciation)**
Oh you mean L8 non-tech (PM role) package is similar to L5 engineer?
In terms of TC, yes, it’s similar.
Your current total Comp is around 500k correct?
It’s a weird question you posed, because no one can answer it, except for yourself
Hmm. Ok. Was wondering if someone went through similar dilemma...
