Offer Off: Google (L4 SWE EngProd) vs. Amazon (L5 SDE Alexa AI)

Hi, I'm trying to decide between offers from Google (L4 SWE EngProd) or Amazon (L5 SDE Alexa AI) in Seattle. My primary concern is that at Amazon I would be working on an AI team doing NLU, which is where I want my career to go. At Google I would be working on quality of another app, which is not where I imagined my career going.

The Google recruiter is telling me that, since this is my third interview with Google, this will likely be my last chance to get into the company. Is this true? I thought I have heard of people interviewing up to eight times, and wouldn't Google want to continue to talk to a candidate to whom they had previously extended an offer? If I join Google as an L4 SWE EngProd, is there any remote possibility of transferring into AI/ML after 18 mos.? If I take the Amazon offer, is this likely to be my last opportunity to work at Google, which I had always considered the Starfleet Academy of tech companies? What would you do, and please leave a comment explaining your choice.

TIA.

Almost guaranteed the G recruiter is full of 💩. If a future G recruiter wants you they won't give a flying...

SDE work in AI, at least at Amazon, might not be as exciting as you expect. Most exciting work is done by Applied Scientists.

This. OP you should re-confirm with Amazon about the exact scope of work that the team does. I'm in Alexa AI btw.

  • Have you done AI/ML projects before ? If yes and you loved it and want to continue doing it.. well let the google go to hell.. your own passion matters more than a company name . You will end up getting some relevant skills in the area of your interest and be in growth trajectory.

But if you have no idea of what entails in AI/ML project ... picking either is just fine .. depending on the money .. maybe google for better name and improving your dating scene if you are in it 😎😎

Improving the dating scene? It's the worst over where Google is. Unless you are shooting for nerdy tech guys, then there everywhere.

Regarding experience with AI/ML: I have been working as an ML engineer in search for the past two years, and I want to become an expert in DNN.

  • Three ONSITE failures will result in no-consideration. If you pass, that definitely doesn’t count as failure, does it?

A recruiter told me once in 2016, there's no consideration if a candidate failed three times in the past. I failed a phone screen in 2013 and HC in 2017. If I prepare to clear Google HC this time, I would try all the stars align for me to succeed. Just so I have the engineering brand stamp (if not the high pay).

I will suggest to join Google. Can you share your Tc for both

Since the combination of these offers and my current employment is unique, I can only share total comp after I’ve completed the offer.

If you are coming to amazon alexa because you will be working on AI and core NLP then I have sad news for you

That you won't work on those... It's mostly going to be grunt work.

Ok thanks. I figured it would be a lot of grunt work. But that I would learn a lot about operationalizing DNNs and some about theory through osmosis. The intersection of theory with performant predictions is interesting to me. I will be continuing my self-learning on DNNs, of course.

Looks like you are leaning towards Amazon and the project seems cooler too. I would go with Amazon.

EngProd at Google might be quite boring since you might be setting up testing infra (not actually writing tests for them) for other projects and so on but you might not get to work on the project directly. I believe the 3 attempts thing stands for failed onsites but you passed this time and that might not apply to you.

Also, you never mentioned your TC

Post numbers bro. Alexa AI has some crappy code as well it’s not all flowers and rose petals - if you like quality this might be a letdown.

This seems like a clear choice based off of what you said. Also the google recruiter is probably playing you. The more you turn them down the more they want you (not the other way around...
