I screwed up my relatively easy coding interviews. Google is firm on T4 and asking me to for comp numbers. Manager and director gave letter of support to uplevel, but no luck. Please advise. Also, will I be looked down upon in Google in T4 with so much exp? I am a lead in current company.
Tough situation. Since you are from Intel, I believe going to Google is still a good direction forward. Just make sure your comp is good and ignore the leveling for now. You can always switch to another company in 2 yrs if needed.
Yeah, as long as comp is what you expect you should be good. 18 years doesn’t mean anything, and Google is known to downlevel everyone, you get some leeway when you come from FAN and unicorns. If you’re good and confident in abilities you’ll get to T5 soon.
Thx. Can anyone suggest any comp numbers I can tell the recruiter? They want me to give some numbers first.
L3 here .. getting >280k.. you should ask for 350
Google tries to down level you. But comp wise they should be able to match T5 comp (350k to 400k) at T4 using RSUs
Pass. They will say you can be promoted quickly to get you on board but in reality it depends a lot on external factors beyond your control. Even if they match your comp you will be at the top of the pay band so your comp will stagnate.
Google always down level. But it should be still much better than Intel.
How badly did u screw up? It can’t be that bad because u got an offer right?
I didn't complete all the problems, and also missed 1 or 2 test cases. Also leadership interview expectation was more I guess. I think system design and phone screen went well.
I was in a similar position although with half the experience. I got offered L4 coming from being a lead at another FANG company, but the comp made sense and Google was the right move for me. Don't believe that they will promote quickly just because you are underleved. I have a manager that tells me I'm clearly underleved during every 1:1, but it doesn't seem to matter. You'll be 1.5-2 years at L4.
You can hide your level. It’s not that uncommon. Better than underperforming at L5. You have 18 years of SWE experience?
Good question. I thought Google rejects people in situations like this. 18 yoe is L5/L6 territory.
We should...
