Personal situation after accepting offer

I accepted a job offer and the new company waited for about 45 days inorder to on-board me. Now, I have a personal situation that I need to take care of my father who needs to go through a major surgery. My current employer has better family leave policy and it's better for me to stick with them until I take care of my father who needs personal attention for about 2 months. I am feeling very bad about communicating this over to new employer that I cannot join and instead its better for me to stick with my employer but I dont want them to feel bad as they waited for about 45 days. Need help and please advice?

You only have one father other jobs will come. It’s all about priorities

Can you not tell them this and ask to delay joining date by 30-45 days?

No if your employer cares about you as an employee, they will wait for your family emergency. If they’ll wait for H1B visa lottery and extend offers for 6 months or some crap, why not for a family emergency?? It’s a good reason.

If they are reasonable they should be on your side. It’s better to delay joining than start then leave. Just call the recruiter/ manager (depends on your stage) and tell them your situation. 2 months delay is honestly nothing.

Does your current employer know you accepted another job?

Regardless, I’d be upfront and honest with the new company to see if they could accommodate you

That's tough, hope it all goes smoothly with your father. Like others says, be upfront and tell them your situation - hopefully they'll be flexible.

I would talk to the new employer. As a former business owner, I would much rather you take leave on someone else’s dime.
