Phone interview with Google

I had my phone interview with Google. I prepared really hard the past 2months. I did over 80 product design questions, 60+ estimation, read cracking PM and other 2 books several times... The unique question I got was:" Tell me about a Techno you are excited about?" We went very deep in details of Blockchain for 45min, while I'm no expert at all... I certainly picked a bad use case. I feel all nights and weekends for prep is waisted. It sucks to work so hard and fail like that...

Reach out to your recruiter to ask if a follow up is possible, BEFORE screen feedback is available. After that, you lose all your leverage.

My interview was today. So you are saying that I can ask the recruiter to be considered for another phone interview BEFORE she receives feedback from the interviewer, right?

Yeah, saying something like you’re not feeling well today or the interview is mismatched, so a follow up or another screen is needed, come up with some reasons to ask for a 2nd chance. Better than doing nothing now.

That would be amazing indeed... as I feel so ready for a regular interview setting. I will give it a trial... thanks for the great idea! Anyone from G wants to comment on this approach?

You still have a chance. If it doesn’t work out this time, try again in few months and continue practicing till then. Its not the end.

True! But still feels frustrating when I really internalized these concepts that I wish/should have been tested for... Sucks emotionally. I can always use the acquired knowledge for other PM role but damn it, that sucks!!

What are the other questions u got?

American Express vista133 OP Jul 15, 2019

None. Only this one for 40min and opened it for me to ask questions the last 5min.

I prepared so hard for phone interview and during the phone interview I couldn’t able to answer a simplest question any CS student would ever think of. I was so embarrassed and wrote a big email to my recruiter explaining about how I got confused during the interview. And requested her to re-consider my answer to that question again or schedule another interview.

God the suspense is killing me! What happened after that?

Cisco techgeek22 Jul 15, 2019

Haha she just said “Its fine, don’t stress a lot now”. And the next week she called me and said she got positive feedback and my overall performance was very good so that answer didn’t affect at all.

Similar experience. Applied online for an analyst role and phone interview was setup in a week. I prepared around 70~80 hours after my work and practiced some mock interviews. On the phone interview, I tried to be interactive with questions to clarify use cases and assumptions but the interviewer was not responsive. He just answered yes/no for all I asked throughout the interview. Surprised if this was really a google interview handled by a Googler.

Sorry man, interviewers can have bad days too. He might have been thinking of his personal or professional problem .... Mine was very engaged as if he wanted to learn as much as he could from me, but I didn't have much to give anyways...

Exactly, that's what i was expecting on a google interview. But I feel your feedback should be good and move forward to next round. Relax & Stay positive. Good luck.
