What is a product design salary for a 5 year graphic design director transitioning into the field?
No offense to you personally, but that is like a doctor of psychology wanting to switch to heart surgery. Yes, you are a doctor, but.... It takes training and experience to make the jump. To answer your question, the salary is all over the place based on location, industry, and experience
I’m just so offended 😂
And Thanks!
It’s whatever you can convince some unsuspecting company who doesn’t understand the difference between graphic design and product design to pay you.
That means it's a company you probably won't want to work for...
probably junior level salary at wherever you apply seeing as the graphic design experience will mostly only translate across to the visual portion of everything that encompasses product design
Not even that. It's a completely different world with a completely different set of rules, even for visuals. Source: majored in GD, work in PD.
Agree. It’s a different world. I’m not considering any candidates for PD roles without a PD portfolio that shows an understanding of development realities on every platform. Otherwise, you’ll do more harm than good. Source: I’m a principal product designer hiring for 3 open roles right now.
What does Graphic Design mean to you? Just print and ads? Then yes, expect to start from junior level. But if your doing web and some ui, then skill can be transferrable. Jr $60k Mid $70-80 Sr $90-100
Graphic design skills are 100% transferable to web and ui. It’s the icing on the cake which encompasses product design. The cake itself is a bunch of other stuff which you need to know outside of graphic/visual design
Yeah and the cake is where you provide actual value.
You’re lucky to fetch above 85k depending on your job market. 5 years of “graphic design” experience means very little to somebody serious about product design. It’s a saturated market with a lot of talent right now.
Depends on where you're headed. Also, it would be safe to bet that you'll probably won't be hired in at a Director level since you're making a shift into a different industry.
