My future employer wants me to start before the vest date of my current employer. I have a lot of unused PTO and I am wondering if I can use that to negotiate with the HR to have me officially at employment till the vest date? Of course I am planning to do the necessary knowledge transfer, documentation to ensure smooth transition for my team but would they take this into consideration and make an exception. Or is it just safer to negotiate with my future employer a later start date. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
Did you tell new employer about your vest date? What’s the time difference? If your new employer is reasonable and it’s not too much of a gap (and RSU amount isn’t negligible), they should understand.
The new employer doesn’t know about the vest date. Also don’t want to tell them as I already negotiated with them on my sign-on to cover my unvested equity. I know it sounds greedy but I find it also unfair to work 95% in the quarter and get 0% equity.
Don't tell them you are quitting after using your PTO, they may not let you vest. Push the official start date back, take your PTO
Depends on how many days it is
Say around 5 business days
5 days is a pittance. Like I said below, even a month isn't unreasonable.
Can’t you cash in your PTO?
Its a much easier explanation to say you want more time to transition into the new role and take time to reflect on the new position and future than it would be to get your old employer to agree to vest you then have you quit. Taking time during a transition, even a month in between is very reasonable.
Don't you think they'd know your vest date based on the date you joined Facebook. I think it's pretty easy to figure it out.
Give an end date after vesting date.. say you need to take.some time off during the resign period..no would bother much as you are leaving.
How far away is the vesting date?
Push your future employer to have a new start date for you.
