Just signed the contract, start date is June 12. The company says they will help out the visa process and will have a relocation company to work with me. I wonder when is a good time to give my 2 weeks notice (preferably later)? Also any advice for making the process as smooth as possible?
Depending on how things are with your manager or company, you probably shouldn’t put in your two weeks notice until you’re ready for them to let you go. They could cut you loose the day you submit your two weeks. Welcome to SF!
Get your TN at any nearby border before you give your 2 weeks
You mean he can go to the border, get TN visa and still stay in Canada? Doesn’t he need to cross the border to get TN visa?
Because you are starting mid-year, be sure to take an extended international vacation, leaving you less than 183 days in both the US and Canada this tax year. You’ll save enough as a non-resident for tax purposes to easily pay for the trip.
Drive to the border and get your TN before giving notice for safety. You can also book a cheap flight to the US, and get the TN at airport preclearance if you’re not close to a land border. Make sure you understand the NAFTA job titles from the treaty. If you fuck up and tell them them a title which isn’t in the treaty you may not get the TN.
Welcome, my fellow Canadian. We are taking over SF.
