Relocation to Google India

Does Google encourage relocation of employees back to India?
I know Microsoft does and there is plenty of good work in Microsoft IDC with good pay. What about Google India?

I plan to relocate back to India in 2-3 years and wanted to see whether it was worthwhile changing to Google now and then making an internal transfer. Primary reason to favor an internal transfer to India is that I would get to keep my unvested stocks and internal transfers generally make for a soft landing.

    1. Join Google in US to get those tasty stock grants
    2. Move to Google India. Keep unvested stocks.
    3. Interview at Microsoft. They looove to hire Googlers. They will bump up your title massively to match your stock.
    4. Chill at Microsoft as a Principal Manager or higher.

But your future annual grants would be a lot lower. You will make a lot lower total comp after 3 years. Better to make as much money as possible here before moving back

Yeah agree, although we are at a place where being away from India is a lot painful than not having a US salary.
We did make a check though. Microsoft pays handsomely at IDC, when compared to the overall industry. I’m sure Google, Amazon and FB do so too. So not worried that much on the salary front.
Just don’t want to give up on the accumulated unvested stock which I slogged for.

Microsoft IDC does not pay as much as most others companies. They are offering roughly 21 lakhs in the first year to fresh grads. Flipkart, Directi, Uber, Goldman Sachs, WalmartLabs etc are paying 25-30 lakhs.

FB doesn't have a dev center in India.

They do allow internal transfers easily. My friend did last year.

You have to consider what location you’d live in India, Google doesn’t have offices everywhere. Amazon has office is most major cities now, but you’d be screwed with RSU joining amazon now.

Targeting either Bangalore or Hyderabad for the reasons you stated. Fine with either one.

One a related note - Does Amazon provide relocation back to India and does it allow the RSUs to be carried over?

Yes, they provide relocation or $15k cash in hand and they pay the tax. RSU’s carry over as is and your base salary close to 1/3rd of US salary. Bangalore is HQ for Amazon India.

I would totally settle for 1/3 rd of the US salary.

How much MS IDC pays in India?

Amazon pays much lower in India compared to others and MSFT only has good projects in Hyderabad IDC.
