My manager asked me about my current offer from FB to prepare a counter offer for me. He said that It is ok if I am not feeling comfortable to share it. He said, we don't want offer something laughable Should I share it? or not?
let him make the offer first and then tell him if it’s competitive or not
Tell him to offer their absolute best package, and then they’ll have nothing to be ashamed about.
Just tell him dude, why would you not? Don’t listen to all the ifs and buts here.
You are leaving for a reason, will that change bc of compensation? Also, your boss knows you now want to leave so you're going to be the first on the chopping block if they have to do cuts, and especially if the retention offer is outside the range of your peers who are doing comparable work. Not sure if that's how your company rolls, but I've seen it happen...retention offer accepted, other offer turned down, current company fires that person. Protect yo self.
Had this happen recently. I was leaving not for money but culture and WLB. I would NOT tell him what your offer is. Tell him how much money it would take to overcome your desire to go to FB. Thing is...there may not be enough money to change your mind.
What’s wrong with telling him? Will he take it away from op? Best case qualcom will match or beat, worst case manager will send resume to op once he has joined FB. Don’t understand the retionale for all the stupid advice here. By the way I ve taken retrntion offers twice. Once i accepted.
“Stupid advice” - because YOU don’t agree that makes it stupid? Your statement pretty much makes you the most ignorant person here. If you’re only reason for leaving is money, then go ahead and tell them exactly what the offer is. If you are leaving for money and other reasons, you are looking for value that is greater than TC. So if FB offers 200k and a better WLB, maybe that is worth 250k at Qualcomm. All I am suggesting is that TC is more than just base + bonus + equity. Suggesting OP take that into account.
Never take a counter offer unless absolutely necessary or you can hack it up- you usually end up being your managements b***c then
Not necessarily. A Google L6 guy managed pushing his TC to 550K from 420K, as he had FB offer of 520K. 11K additional comp a month is a good amount, and enjoying better work culture and WLB make him staying at Google.
What’s the TC delta (absolute term)? If it’s around 30%, I guess manager can get the counter for you.
If you have a rough idea about the pay range of your role..... Take the max and add 10% to it. If that is significantly lower than your current offer I would just tell the manager it isn't for the pay that you are moving and make up some other excuse. Because probably he won't be able to match it anyways and even if he spends equity in getting an offer for you you will reject it because of other non monetary reasons. Why make him go through the exercise.
Well said.
