Hello, I'm fresh out of college and have done pretty well. 4 internships (worked during school year alongside classes as well), and graduating from a top 10 school. I have an offer in hand (yay!!), But I feel it's a bit low. How exactly should I go about negotiation? I literally don't know how to word it.
Hard to tell without knowing figures and location
I'm not trying to reveal figures and location. I was merely wondering how to ask for a negotiation.
Go interview some more padawan.
Ask for what you want. But as a fresh grad, just take the offer.
Just be upfront and tell them what you want and give good reasons for it. Cite things like glassdoor or other resources The worst they can say is no. I've never heard of an offer being rescinded because someone wanted to negotiate.
Thanks!
put ur nuts on the table
Um, no thank you.
Is it low because its below market rate or do you feel its low just because you want more. Frankly, your school doesn't mean jack and I'd advise to stop putting it on a pedestal. Your experience is all that matters. With that said you have to prove why you deserve more. Do you have more experience than most new grads? Are you able to contribute in ways others can't? I'm sure you'll prove yourself. Sounds like you have worked hard your whole life and won't stop here. Remember, you've only begun paying your dues. Good luck
Thank you for the response. I was under the impression that experience overrules education as a more experienced engineer. Initially, your school and projects matter. Is this not true?
Focus on getting good experience (good team / work). Then job switch in two years for a salary bump if that's what you want.
Negotiate only when you have competing offers. So go out there and do more interviews.
Thanks!
