Now that women in tech is growing and women can raise voice against harassments and movements like #metoo are gaining popularity let’s discuss which women related comments/ jokes in workplace are sexist and which are not/ considered as jokes. Note - talking about casual office discussions and not extremes like work place harassments or abuse
Jokes have been dead for 3 years now.
Honestly, in my experience it’s never ok to make a female related joke. There’s just too much uncharted territory there. Most male related jokes are generally ok though.
Even comedians get fucked for making this kind of joke. Ya know at the show where you pay to hear edgy jokes.
Oh, this thread is about jokes. Maybe you posted on the wrong thread?
I'm not afraid of conversations and want to be women's ally but honestly I'm scared.
Ladies and gentlemen BILL BURR!
Ok to get this thread on track, state if you find below joke as sexist : A man is being arrested by a female police officer, who informs him, "Anything you say can and will be held against you." The man replies, "Boobs!"
No. Some males get boobs. And lots of females like boobs, too. I mean, who doesn't like boobs?
Not work appropriate.
hello police this joke was bad enough that i briefly considered throwing myself off the closest bridge
Light-hearted (but occasionally awkward): - “Good enough for the girls we date!” - “Must be a girl thing.” Downright offensive/illegal: - “WHAT?...Can’t you work while on bed rest?” (From a Tableau PM - during a public standup - who was pissed that my absence during a high-risk pregnancy might endanger another one of his last minute feature adds. He tried to apologize by calling it a “joke”.) - “Ever heard it called ‘chasing the red rat’?” (From 2 male colleagues during a shared drive to a client site. They were discussing cleaning trash cans and directly started talking to me about bloody tampons, aka ‘red rats’.) - “I’m going to hit that b*tches backdoor so hard, she’ll feel it in her throat!” (Tableau lunch area, male developers discussing fraternizing plans during the Vegas TCC). ...After 10 years in the industry, I have so many offensive ones, but I’ll just put these down as my top 3.
Illegal???
“ An employer cannot just assume that words are harmless and bury its head in the sand.” http://www.ohioemployerlawblog.com/2010/01/warning-vulgar-language-ahead-11th.html?m=1 I’d add that I only think 2 of my 3 offensive examples cross legal lines (mostly because the offending party was pervasive in their harassing language towards me).
you seem like a real charmer
