Sharing my recent FB&G comp + AMA about interviews

I have had a lot of helps from the community throughout my job search. I wanted to give back by sharing my comp and do an AMA about interviews. I did not sign any NDA about comp so I assume it's ok to share.

1.6 yr exp in U.S., Canadian bachelor in CS. Yes, I posted recently and asked about negotiation and pissed off some people because I thought my initial offers were low balling. But anyway ...

Facebook E4, Google L3
Facebook 1st offer: 140 / 220 / 0
Google 1st offer: 140 / 230 / 0
Facebook 2nd offer: 150 / 240 / 0
Google 2nd offer: 145 / 300 / 30
Facebook 3rd offer: 160 / 300 / 50

FAQ

1. What's the interview question?

Signed NDA. What I can share is Google questions were about medium while Facebook was medium/easy (leetcode levels). No brain teasers.

2. How did you prepare?

What really helped me and I think you should do if you are doing a system design interview is getting a mocked system design interview. It helps a ton.

3. How did you negotiate?

Someone on blind pointed me to this post which helped a lot. https://medium.freecodecamp.org/ten-rules-for-negotiating-a-job-offer-ee17cccbdab6

Thank you again Blind! Feel free to ask or PM. I might not be able to get back really quick though. Also please don’t ask me to break my NDA.

How do you know if you’re doing a system design interview? Is that based on position and/or years of experience?

What type is system design questions do they generally ask? Design tiny url?

My case don’t generalize very well but I think it usually is related to the field that interviewer is working on. Let’s say if he/she works on Messenger maybe they tend to ask about real-time messaging. YMMV. One thing I did was asking my recruiter who my interviewers are before the interview and I went through his LinkedIn.

      I really recommend

      1) Mock interview with your friend in FB

$235k TC without sign on or $285 with sign on. Many return interns get $100k sign on and $300TC first year. So first year comp is close to new grad but after that it is definitely better than new grad

New grad hardly gets E4 though. Never heard about 300 TC non phd new grad.

You can get it with competing offers

I bet it’s not possible for E3. They won’t nudge level from E3 to E4 if you did not do sys design interview which new grads don’t.

I do know 2 returning interns with competing offers and $100k sign on hit the $300k mark. But it is not common. Their base was very good at $140k with $240k rsu and $100k sign on. Both base and rsu were due to multiple competing offers

    Congratulations!

    1. How did you ensure both the offer timeframe happened to land together such that you could negotiate leveraging each other?

    2. How quickly does the process go for each. Time from the first recruiter email to phone to onsite. My experience has been once you start the process the ball keeps rolling. Did you get to dictate the timeline?

      Thanks 🙏

You’ll want to lump your interviews together. Once you have one offer, let other recruiters know and they will expedite the process. Google knew FB is giving me offer so they made the offer within 2 weeks after the interview. I also guess that your interview performance would affect the timing a bit because apparently they prioritize by the chance they think you would pass HC

Both like a month from first phone call to finish (aka today). I’d say it’s usually fast. You just want to be bold and follow up proactively. They are busy and will actually appreciate your reminder

Great info. 👍 FB questions were medium to easy is that becoz of 1.6yr exp or is that how it is even for seniors (8+ yrs)? How abt hard ones?

      OP
I think at least for E3 - E5 they don’t differentiate coding questions difficulty. Difficulty is really a YMMV thing. I’d say if you are well prepared for ~6 weeks you are good. Preparation really makes difference.

It also depends on interviewers. Too many variables.

Cool. 6 wk prep. == leetcode binge? And one more, how did you skip the phone screenings?
      Feb 23, 2018
    • Yelp SMMall
      OP
No really. I spent more time implementing basic algorithms than leetcode.

I had strong referrals from people who worked with me before and who are now senior in FB/G. I believe that’s why I skipped.

The thing is that it’s now interviewers who give you ratings instead of HC. So the chance of being sent to HC might have decreased

What was the Facebook phone screen like? 1 or 2 qs? Easy or medium? How did the Fb onsite go? 2 qs each interview at medium? Any questions beyond leetcode?
    Feb 23, 2018 3
    • Yelp SMMall
      OP
I skipped both phone screens. Onsite was a bit arbitrary. I did 3 qs / 1 qs / 1 qs / 1 qs for each round + sys design. The 3 qs guy thought I did too fast so he ended up just throwing me any stock he left in his question backlog.

FB is famous for giving leetcode question but they were modified ones.
