I'm having a generally good time at Amazon now. In barely 1.4 years I got promoted to SDE2. It's been 3 months now and my manager is putting me in a tech lead position. He wants to push me to SDE3. I love my manager and my work. I work in Bay Area which is fine. Lately I'm concerned about the TCT model... Maybe this means I'm not earning as much as I would be if I was in Google which really irks me. Also I've been feeling that for the extra effort I've put to improving the infrastructure for the team, I'm not being compensated properly (I don't think I'll be getting extra stock this April since 2 years aren't over yet even though I'm TT). Also I think our PE is useless and I personally have little respect for. I don't know if I should focus on the being a tech lead or if I should Leetcode my way out to Google. It feels too much to do both. What should I do? TC 245K YOE 3.5
Stay and make L6. You got many things going for you.
Unpopular opinion: TC is not everything. If you really like job/manager, see growth opportunities, I don’t see a reason to move.
Dude... I only get 150 for base with 5 years of experience. You good. Stay and leetcode for a year or two.
245k for 3.5 YOE is great though. You won't beat that by much unless you land L5 (very difficult for 3.5 YOE), or L4 with competing offers from strong companies. If you are progressing fast with a good team/manager, leaving for just a bit more TC seems like a bad idea. If you get promoted to SDE3, wouldn't your comp be 300k+ easily anyways?
Yeah this is true...but sometimes I deal with the BS that comes with the 9-5 jobs. So sometimes I get discouraged. So if I deal with BS no matter what, then why not seek to maximize the TC is how I feel.
Seems all is good. There is always a risk of having a bit better TC but ultimately not clicking with team. Sometimes work environment is more important than earnings, plus, there is a growth path anyway.
Leave, you're already thinking about it. You will never be happy until you experience the other side.
Leave Amazon anyway possible.
Fuck man...I guess 1 Leetcode a week isn't a bad place to start then...
Yes. Google is good
