I recently got an offer. I’m debating if I should let my new manager know that I want to start my work as late as after new year for some gap vocation. Communication may be good. But I mainly only need to deal with HR service about settling my start date. In normal process, I don’t even need to talk to my hiring manager. All I’m worried is my new manager will be upset for my late start date, and will question my work attitude, etc. Asking my new manager in advance may be good, but if he explicitly refuses my request, I will have no way but to give up my vocation, worse than not asking in my opinion. Am I right or wrong? Any advices on what is the best move? Also, what are the good excuses out there?
For a big company it probably less impactful than a smaller one. Try to talk with your manager, its holidays season most people are off anyways and you will be onboardered a lot slower
I recently went thru this and talked directly to the hiring manager, I asked hr that I'd like to discuss the start date and vacation (I wanted to negotiate for more after hr said no initially). I gave a list of reasons and how with the holidays and such it's really not as much delay. I surprisingly got my request and he gave me more than 2 months until I start.
Be open. A reasonable request shouldn't be an issue.
Which company
I never usually have a problem with people starting later. It’s not uncommon for H-1B transfers to take months under Cheeto, so I’m already assuming the worst in terms of start dates.
TC?
Yes, I got my offer in the first week of November and have negotiated for a Feb start date which could potentially be postponed due to visa formalities. They will not withdraw offer for timely and polite requests. However I do not know if small companies can afford to give start dates that are months out.
It depends how long, is it a 1-2 week extension? 1 month, 1 quarter?
