Stay humble and stay fierce my friends

Apr 20 88 Comments

Came to this country with literally 1 dufflebag and $1500 in my pocket 8 years ago. Did everything from mopping the cafeteria floor to cleaning other's dirty laundry and even cleaning toilets during summers to get through college. My net worth just hit $200k. This is way more than my entire family is worth. Have a steady $200k job and am grateful every single day. Everyone has a struggle, so take a moment to pat on your back. Statistically speaking, You are probably significantly better off than your parents. Stay humble and stay fierce my friend 🙏❤️

Get a life, DaReelReal. You take a non-political post and make it political? Grow the fuck up. People that came here illegally are just as important to our economy as people that came legally. Get a life.

      1. Valuing legality is not political
      2. I'm not responsible for your troubled and visceral reaction. I can express genuine gratitude to whoever, however, whenever, wherever, and whatever I please.

Taking a post that didn’t mention OP’s status and calling attention to your personal preference for legal vs illegal immigration is political, and you know it is. Get a life.

It also doesn't take into account all the efforts to stem legal immigration by this administration. These days, you can count on anyone obsessing about illegal immigration to also be against legal immigration and making it harder for those folks.

Nope, they only think with feelings.

Actually it seems to me that conservatives are the ones that think with feelings (usually fear) and ignore facts, data, and logic. Any time I ask a conservative why they’re so opposed to undocumented immigrants remaining in the country, they argue with feelings and start calling names. They ignore facts like the fact that Obama deported more undocumented immigrants than any president in history, or that undocumented immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than native born Americans, or studies that show that undocumented immigrants pay taxes, do not lower wages, do not negatively affect others’ job prospects, and contribute to the economy. I have yet to hear one fact-based argument that stands the test of logic as to why we should build a wall or separate families at the border.

Yeah doesn’t sound racist at all. But “tc or gtfo” still would’ve been funnier. 🙂

The statement is not racist, but posting a statement in another language in a primarily English based forum can lead others to bash on said culture.

This app is meant for US audience, as you're asked to pick a country at the time of signing up.
And in any case the language here is undoubtedly English.
It is time such comments are flagged.
And to be frank, such comments, personal attacks etc come from just one particular ethnicity.

Not that I want to engage in a (non)war of ethics on an anonymous forum which gives you a mask to fuel your spiteful side, but some food for thought for people who object...What I posted here could have been done by literally ANYONE. What if I were from a non-Indian ethnicity and copy pasted this snippet from Google translate for fun (which is how I did it anyway) ? My guess is that would be funny and there won’t be a single chump crying “racism”. Not going to entertain this non issue any further.

PS: Mighty impressed by how much Google translate has evolved. Also, congratulations OP!

Came to this county as a wife of a man who was trying everything possible on this earth to break my confidence. 3 years later- my TC is more than him. I clean, cook, take care of kids and work in office. Never felt so confident of myself

Let’s all blame the person whose spouse changed and cause problem. It’s appalling to see how some folks oversimplify things or intentionally try to take side!

Just because someone is a victim, doesn't mean we shouldn't point out their actions that could have made them the victim in the first place.
Nothing wrong in saying, next time you go on a vacation, lock your doors.

  • I came with 4 bags, $1300 cash, and a $2k debt. 6 years later, my net worth was anegative 20k.

2 years after that, my net worth was about $10k.

8 years after that, it was $500k, and it is now aout a million dollars.

    Well, big fucking whoop.

One point glossed over in such heartwarming stories of the American dream is that the immigrant with few bags and fewer dollars came here with a high paying job or a good college admission lined up, I.e., we were poor only when described using the age old "bags and cash dollars physically hauled out the airport" metric, but with an almost guaranteed entry into the American middle class.

If you came here with 3 bags and 2 dollars and had nothing lined up here, and no one you knew to help you, and then proceeded to save 200k in 8 years, that would be a story of great good fortune worth telling.

      Apr 20
    • Microsoft tech.ladki
I agree, but it's still impressive considering that many who live with more than a bag or a few dollars in pocket just around the University couldn't do as much.

Apple, you must be fun at parties (the few that you get invited to that is).
      Apr 21
    • I am told that I am indeed a very fun person. And although "few" and "many" are subjective, especially in quantifying the number of parties one is invited to, I believe I get invited to a respectable number of parties. There is, after all, a lot of liquor being served, and someone needs to sober people up before they leave the party.

Nice story man. I often feel the same way. We are really fortunate to be in this industry. Some people may get offended by this but I don't think there is anything special about us. We just happened to pick the right industry. Lots of super hardworking people in other jobs with far smaller net worths simply because they're in a different field. I feel very fortunate.

I appreciate you and your post.
