Singing joining Blind, I’ve become jealous of how much money you all are making. I have 1.5 YOE in marketing (paid search and social) making $65k In the next few years, I can climb up to $85k and probably $95k as a supervisor. In the long term, I can make a decent salary. But the TC you guys can pull at $350k sounds like super high level marketers (managing directors, CMOs, etc) What is the consensus on coding boot camps? I don’t code, so I’d have to learn fundamentals first. But it seems I can come out making over $80k - and then the sky is the limit. Is this naive? Have you seen switched from marketing to coding? Tl;dr is it worth it to go through a boot camp to get into coding and make more money in the long term ?
Are you good with logic, understanding syntax, mathematics, algorithms, analytics, logical reasoning, etc? Try some online courses on coding. Pick a language like Python to start with. Evaluate your skills and then decide which field in coding you want to transition your career. I once met a marine who retired and then started coding, after 2-3 yrs he was good and transitioned to Storage systems design in C/C++ (yr 2012)
I switched from administration to SRE and now into Development. First step in coding with DataScience and then into AI/ML. I chose python3 to learn using books and online videos.
Admin job paid :90k TC after 8yrs I jumped to 140K Dev pays : 660K TC
It's not like anyone can take a 3 month bootcamp and start with 150k tc.
I always wonder why people don't start fresh. Afterall - there is no law that education is something that can only be done during undergraduate. Your thinking is great. Best way to know what you are made of is to take some online courses. Coursera or Udacity has plenty. Start with python or sql and see how you like it.
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I think I will get some online study time. Then, I can probably take some data analytics/science courses paid for by my company that are based around marketing analytics/reporting. Thank you.
Yeah, data science might be a harder topic than programming unless you already have some fundamentals of mathematics or statistics or willing to learn them. I'd try to get good at coding first. Though these days everything is called data science and you can probably be one without knowing too much about statistics.
Best of luck, will be rooting for you!
I have one friend that successfully convert from finance through bootcamp, but to be honest, I am not seeing it as something common. Some of my friends tried to do the same thing, one failed badly right from bootcamp stage, and one is still unemployed until now. So I would say, try to see if you can really code some simple things first through an online course, and then, invest your time properly to start studying properly, don’t skip things and think you will make 80k easily after 12months of bootcamp.
Thanks for the insight!
Try to switch from Windows to Linux at home and see if you like the experience (the transition experience, not necessarily the final result). If you do you have a chance. If you don’t then just don’t do it.

How about actually trying coding before going to a boot camp? Some are good, others are effectively advertising a get rich quick scheme.
I said I would clearly need to learn before that. But I would only invest the time if it’s for a bigger career move. I just wanna get a sense of what people say on here. Like it they’re like yes get the fuck out of marketing, I wouldn’t just do it but I’m interested in knowing how it’s viewed in tech. Thanks for the comment.
