Anyone started as a TPM and grew into an EM?

What steps did you take? How was the journey

Lot of them at Amazon. Most of them are not respected by their teams as they chose an easy path to get there plus their general lack of technical details.

When I'm looking for a transfer, I make sure the prospective SDM is not a QAM -> SDM or a TPM -> SDM. Also, SDE2 to SDM is kinda frowned upon, although better than QAM/TPM to SDM.

What’s the best path? SDE3 to SDM?

^ This. I am a current L6 SDE with direct reports (7) and I am on path to a SDM role. I remember 2 years back when I was SDE2, my mentor was a Principal Engineer, and I mentioned to him that I want to explore SDM path. He very clearly said that as a mentor he would discourage that. He told me to go L6 SDE to L6 SDM route, and I am actually pretty happy that I listened to him.
