What are some of the coolest tech companies in the area? From what I've researched, Amazon is the only major tech company investing in hiring more than 500 employees in the area.

Microsoft, Google, and Facebook have relatively small presences.

Beyond that, there are a handful of startups:
Upside Travel, Fundrise, LiveSafe, CuriosityMedia

What are your experiences?

Frankly, I think Capital one is the best of the big tech employers in that area. Everything else is government contracting/consulting. Maybe things will change once Amazon starts building out their new hq. But I’m glad to have left that area.

@steaklover, Austin, which may not be SV, but it’s more of a tech hub than DC/NoVa. Plus, the COL is significantly cheaper.

Fannie and FINRA have somewhat toxic work environments and are anything but cool.

How is VMWare’s rep? I noticed they have a location near Reston Town Center (where Amazon/Google/Msft have offices)
