Technical Sales Engineer Salary
I am just curious and was hoping I could get some opinions. Anyhow, I am a recent grad with a mechanical engineering degree and I previously had two internships working for an automation company, mostly programming PLCs. To get to the point, I was hired for an automation company as a technical sales engineer in the Seattle area and I make 45,000 a year. I believe I am underpaid. What's your opinion? And what do you think would be a more reasonable salary? I will appreciate your input.
Yes, you need to connect to an in demand field. Be an inside sales se in tech. With decent soft skills, an entry level will pay at least 50% more and train you on the tech.
Yes, unless you also receive commission. ME here. My career has been mostly technical sales/marketing. Starting TC was $100k in 2011. Now I am at $200k (in Texas).
You need to get out NOW! I mean get some good experience in (at least 2 years to show that you can deliver results and projects) but then GTFO. It’s going to be a pain in the ass to get your career on track bc you’re seen as $45k/year value. I was in your same shoes 12 years ago. Took my 8 to get to baller status but I made it. Make your next moves VERY wisely and don’t stick around each of your next jobs for too long (again, 2 year rule).
Thank you guys for replying. These are great inputs. At the moment I feel like I'm stuck. I don't want to apply some place else as I don't have much experience and leaving the new job will look bad. My plan is to stick around and earn enough experience and knowledge so I can impress my next employer, but at the same time I want to leave my current company on a good note, so I can use them as a reference. 2 years might be a bit of a stretch under these circumstances. Would you say a year of experience and a demonstration of good knowledge be enough for my next employer to give me a more lucrative offer? Once again thank you for the advice.
Find 2-3 roles at Amazon that align well to your experience and skill sets. Message me and we can take it from there. But if you ever want to make it you need to shake this poor me attitude and be more “can do” kinda guy.

However, I believe it's more of me being unaware of the industry. I rushed into taking the position as I was in need of a job. I do enjoy what I'm doing, but I learned that people in the same position earn much more. On top of my engineering background , I have a degree in biology, I'm fluent in 4 languages, and I'm a great team player. I guess I wasn't aware of my value until now and I want make changes.
