The glory of NYC for single men

Amazon / Product Section X
Nov 20, 2017 53 Comments

A friend at Amazon moved out to NYC in early September to work at a hedge fund. Here in Seattle, he was struggling socially, barely going on dates. In nyc things have taken a 180 turn. He has literally gotten several hundred online matches, and he has to turn down dates because his dating schedule is so jam packed. He also joined cool upscale social clubs such as Ivy and Soho House and meeting tons of smart interesting people. When I saw him in NYC last week, he was so much happier that he seemed like a different man.

Yes, location matters. For single men, Seattle is a no go.

@GoSnappy just because it's expensive does not mean it's a scam. Lol.

Correct. The fact that they accept basically everyone and pretend it's exclusive AND they charge a heap of money makes it a scam. It's okay to admit that you got duped.

Lol. A scam occurs when products or services that were promised are not properly rendered. Ivy merely offers a chance to attend events and meet people. Nothing more. Nothing less. It's also ironic that a guy who works at overhyped Snapchat is thumping his chest about scams.

I'm leaving soon, so feel free to rip on Snap. Walking away with mid-7 figures. I don't feel too bad. I didn't have to pay 2000$/yr and have people lie to me and tell me I'm a special elite snowflake either. 😂

I have all but 1 of the FANG companies on my resume too. Want to rip on those too?

Amazon is a total lightweight in FANG....hiring bar wise 😂

I don’t understand you guys. I don’t have game but Seattle was never difficult to get dates. I’m not saying every one of them was quality wife material but in my single days I was never starved for dates. There are lots of single women here.

Same for me when I was single. Based on his posts here, I’m fairly certain that OP has some abrasive personality issues, and probably isn’t a “social butterfly” by any means.

Seattle’s ratio of men to women allows women to be picky here, and they evidently aren’t picking OP.

My son interned in Brooklyn and loves it. He is planning to move there when he graduates. We're happy because we love visiting NY and will have a good excuse. I overheard him telling several Tinder stories and it was a target rich environment. Not sure about long term relationships, but dating is pretty easy there. He didn't know a single person when he arrived but met a lot of people and made several friends. Already has an internship and roommates lined up for the summer.

So even if you are a software engineer that doesn't really like to go clubbing or whatever shit and you aren't white, you can still do well in NYC?

My friend is actually Asian, but he's totally Americanized. Born and raised here. NYC and maybe LA are the only U.S. cities where successful Asian-American men can do well with attractive white women.

@kernelgrrl, I could care less if you believe it or not. More broadly speaking, if you really think NYC and Seattle are equivalent when it comes to the dating scene, then you probably have not lived in both cities as a single man.

I don’t consider 1st gen Asians Westernized. They might think they are but still carry cultural ties to the motherland. Any interaction with them always reveals something I am unfamiliar with from language to arranged marriages to food preferences. Then when I talk to those who have been out 5 or 6 generations it’s a different experience. They may look Asian but it’s superficial and culturally they’re a different entity.

Op, we find it hard to believe that NYC is somehow an easier place for a non social nerd to find a decent date, we’re not doubting that dating dynamics would be different in these cities. We just think your friend is perhaps exaggerating by portraying escorts as dates

This is the experience of most single men who have lived in both NYC and Seattle. But a couple of the women posters in this thread find it impossible to believe that perhaps the 2 cities can be quite different in terms of the social and dating dynamics.

If you are in Finance in NYC you are an easy target for women. Nothing new here. In Seattle it is a different scene and more outdoor activities.
