How do Promos work at Uber? I took an offer for an SWE I, with my manager saying that he expects to put me up for promo around June/July. I'm wondering if I hosed myself by leveling in at SWE I, and if I'll get more stock grants/a raise once that promo goes through. YoE: 2-3
Come July your manager will say, although you’re performing at SWE 2 level, we’d like to see you perform at that level for a little more time before promoting.
To be clear, I'm not asking whether it's possible to get promo'd in 6 months. I know it's difficult but possible. I'm wondering what a promotion usually yields in terms of salary + stock bumps.
OP should’ve negotiated a higher level. Uber gives SWE 1 to bootcamp grads and diversity hires like Fowler.
It’s a year minimum before promo. When are you joining?
Was supposed to join in November but things got delayed so I'll be coming in mid January.
You get refreshers every year in March. Promos do not trigger refreshers.
From personal experience, I will never again believe these kinds of promises by managers and recruiters. Their job is to get talent in the door for as cheap as possible. Once you're in, they're not really looking out for you.
This. Don't ever believe in the future.
Minimum 1 year in role to be put up for promo
According to people I've talked to that's usually the case but not a hard and fast rule. Do you have any info on stock refreshers for promo?
I’ve seen this rule used over and over again against top performers. As for promo bonus / stock refreshers, we’ve been told there will be some movement on them next year, so not sure what it will be. General sentiment so far is it will be less than last year’s, but we’ll know exactly in March when it happens. In general, promo refresh does not beat external hire grant for the same level, at any tech company.
