Vent: SWE Job Applications

A bit about me: <2 yoe, underpaid at current job, studying & applying for jobs, and aiming for a tech company

The issue: Straight up denials from larger companies even prior to a phone call (Non FAANG)

My resume is formatted fairly well & it gets parsed accurately. The only interview requests I get are startups looking to underpay in larger cities (Where it wouldnt make sense economically) or niche positions in education/healthcare industry. E.g. got denied last year by Twitter even with 2 referrals, to a position I met the requirements for. Got a referral for Dropbox via LinkedIn & didnt even hear back.

I know I’m not the best candidate but I just feel hopeless applying for jobs sometimes. I see people right out of college getting tons of interviews requests and it makes me question myself & what I’m doing wrong.

I kill the behavioral interviews and it’s a hit or miss with technical screens (so far 100% success rate this year, waiting to hear back as to on site interviews for 2 roles), but I apply to a solid amount of jobs everyday that I’m at least partially qualified for with minimal returns on applications.

Is work experience limiting me? Is it skills? Is it something else? Im applying for generic SWE positions and just watching my mental health suffer as I throw my resume into applications only to never hear back or get auto denied.

I think it's where you work and your current experience and not you personally. Try Amazon, they hire anyone.

Would get paid more and would still help open up doors in the future even if it does not last that long lol

      Yep pretty much

Also how did you apply for OCI? Did you just apply online or have a referral?

      No referral
Honestly I applied online also but ended up getting in touch with a manager on LinkedIn. Did that twice and now my on-site will be a double loop, I’m twice as nervous about the interviews now haha.

Nice lol. Did you reach out to the manager on Linkedin or did they reach out to you? Ive heard that reaching out to people on Linkedin is the best way to escape the online application black hole

      I reached out via LinkedIn.
It’s a hit and miss tbh, sometimes people are really responsive like in this case. Other times it’s the same where they either don’t add you back or don’t reply

There's a flood of new grads and you being 2 yoe doesn't give any real advantage over new grads, so learn as much as you can, Leet daily until you get more Yoe and they'll approach you.

What’s the point in being leet smart if you don’t even get many interview requests. Only 1 HackerRank/coding challenge so far, and that was for Quora
