I'm not looking for a stressful job, want to work hard but also have a significant life outside of work. Are there people here from Viasat? How's politics? I just want to work for a nice company that appreciates a SWE that can work 9-5. Is this possible there? I have 3 YOE btw.
It's a good place to work, but don't be expecting stock or bonuses like we see discussed here.
You sound like the prime candidate for Verizon. Here we believe in the 1 hour work week.
Viasat is definitely a cool place to work. Work life balance is great and overall everyone is fairly chill here. Depends on your group though. Were you offered base $125k with 3 YOE?
It depends on the team and department. Most departments are very chill and very good to work for, but others suffer from bad leadership and poor project planning. They dont offer bonuses or stock options so be comfortable with the base salary.
Is this one of the government contractors doing SATCOM, like Brown & Root?
If you want to chill and rest Viasat is a good place. They pay ok but don’t expect too much. Also note that it’s kind of hard to grow within the company and if you plan on one day joining other top companies, Viasat may hinder you.
Other teams are not chill and rest. They work hard. Several co-workers have FAANG experience and choose to stay given the autonomy the company gives engineers. Reasonable cash and RSUs bonuses are offered annually on a discretionary basis. If you’re not aware of bonuses then you should consider asking your manager about it.
Hardware maybe but not for software. It's hard to believe people with FAANG experience would go there. The software engineer TC even after adjusting with the COL would not be anywhere close to any FAANG or tier 1/2 companies. After doing a quick Linkedin search, don't see a lot of people with past FAANG experience at Viasat. Don't get me wrong, Viasat is a good company, I used to work there, people are great the WLB is superb but career growth wise it really sucks. Also the pay isn't really good either, that's why I decided to jump ship.
The reality is a bit more nuanced, even for software. The SW engineers who have joined from FAANG carry most to all of their TC with them. Yes there are not very many. They don’t join the company for TC alone. Viasat can’t compete on only TC which supports your perspective. The offers it makes are more targeted. If you prove your worth and have a supportive mgr or hire in with the right SW team it’s possible to get a comparable TC. That said, I agree with you that it is at least harder to get a high TC. The best way to get a better TC is to leave and come back, unfortunately.
I had worked with some ppl from there. The wlb is really good. The pay seems decent I think since Qualcomm pays something comparable in SD area.
