A few folks I know have this title on their LinkedIn profile. Their job have nothing to do with ML. They just happen to be in an ML team working with ML scientists
Not true, a lot of them are ML engineers, can get really ML heavy.
What does that mean? You come with a machine learning based model to solve some issue or do you implement a solution that someone else came up with ?
Both. You find solutions and models for business problems and sometime take state of the art research and scale them up in production. Both need a lot of ML experties. There are lots of fake ML engineers though, just like data scientist. What I described is the job of real ML eng.
They can be anywhere in the spectrum! At one end theyβre just SWE working with ML engineers or scientists. At the other end, they are designing and developing the model and doingMl work along with light or heavy SW work (such as productionizing as service, building training and data processing infra).
