What FANG-type options do I have if I dont want to move to one of the two major FANG cities?

There's Amazon in Portland, but I never hear any positive stories from those that work in the office. The lack of perks also contributes to a lack of interest.

Not boring in a way that there's not enough places to get smashed at. People in Zurich are extremely conservative (not in a Republican way, just conservative). People in Paris are huge dickheads to you if you don't speak French. Amsterdam is the one I just visited multiple times, and it just seems sterile, even though people are far nicer than in Paris/Zurich.

I've spent a couple of months in Boston, Baton Rouge, and Austin during my PhD, and in all those cities, people were much more welcoming.

Thanks for that explanation! What do you mean by people are extremely conservative in Zurich, but not in a Republican kind of way? Curious 🤔

They never seem to hire for that location. I've asked recruiters several times over the past two years and looked at their careers page. The recruiter always responds with "no" and no longer cares to recruit me. I can't tell if that office is dying now that the Nest brand was dropped.

Do they hire often? Or is it a pretty small office? I work a few blocks away from their location. I checked the careers page yesterday and nothing Dev related seemed open.

We have headcount but it’s paced out quarter to quarter. Q3 is coming up soon so keep an eye out for new openings. Office has a sizable product team that’s cross functional, solid leadership and culture. Worth just saying hello!

Looking for a pay jump. Not sure I'm going to get it as easily here as if I joined a FANG type company.

Sitting at TC: ~140k, looking to jump to a senior dev role.

Portland. 8 years work experience but 2 strictly as a SDE title. The other years are more hardware related.

Interesting. I've heard the opposite from those that joined my company. Perhaps self driving pays well though.

Google just added a new office in Madison, Wisconsin. Not sure how many people they hire though.
