Cover rent, in a 1 or 2 bedroom, food, car ownership, etc
Based on my own calculations, I would personally need about $180k.
Depends on two things. Your definition of a comfortable life If you are willing to live with a roommate(s)
Not willing to deal with a roommate Be able to save 1-2k a month , after taxes and own a car
130-140k
80k after taxes, so let’s say 140k before taxes. California has almost as much tax as Europe

Assume 45% of income is never even seen federal and local income tax. 3000/month for 1br1bath or 4k for 2br1bath split with another is only 2k. 3000 (rent) x12 1000(car/gas/insurance/maint) x12 1000(food)x 12 1000 unthinkable costs/spending money x12 Save 2k in bank x12 Totals 8000x12 is 72000 post tax equals 72000/.55 = 130,000 Note this amount does not include 401k contributions for retirement which is suggested at 1500$/month.
1k for food is really steep. That would suggest eating out several times a week and buying a good amount of groceries. Also, why 45% of income? That's an unrealistic tax unless op has child support / alimony, etc.
Not steep at all if you have a dating life!
150k+
Does that include performance bonus
However you earn it, doesn't really matter. Cash is cash.
