What is the secret to getting hired at Microsoft?

I’ve been trying to get on at MSFT on and off, for the last two years. I have MSFT references, have been sucessfully marketing Enterprise products for 7+ years, 15 YoE in mkg, but my resume is met with tumbleweeds.

Give it to me straight. What is the secret to getting hired? Is working at a VAR detrimental?

Got this one covered. I’ve applied for over a dozen roles over the last few years.

A dozen? 2 years? It took me 40+ to do my first internal transfer. It’s a numbers game.

Thats good to know, I’ve been trying to really target marketing roles, which might be more limited then engineering roles, but it sounds like that is not the right approach. Thanks for the info

I could have gone to hiring events and networked in person but I relied on cold informational requests. Worked out in the end

Microsoft does team based hiring and uses armies of contract recruiters; their experienced candidate recruiting apparatus is one of the worst in the industry. Even if you did get noticed, they'd be shoving you into random cattle call hiring events.

For some inexplicable reason, their university hiring program is a lot better (that's also the only area where they tend to make truly competitive offers).

It's really not you. It's them.

That’s mind boggling, thank you for sharing your insight. So, next step is going back to college!
