What is it like at Bloomberg as a Software Engineer? Are you just a code monkey or do you get to make some decisions about design and tech stack?
I have interviewed Bloomberg engineers, and the way they described their role fits into the "code monkey" category. Thats ok for Junior engineers. But is it like that for more senior ones.
got it. I try to avoid coding like a monkey even if it is very easy implementation or completely customized, company specific framework (change x in y file, and a in b and it will magically work)
Ok, if you don't have any useful info, move on, buddy.
? Wtf @hypeforce
Lots of legacy code, but is moving towards more relevant standards. WLB depends on the team, some app teams are intense, infra is chill. Pays well enough for NYC. Lots of opportunities to make decisions if you take the initiative, and you will get noticed. This was my experience, ymmv
Hey, how is data dog? Heard a lot over podcast recently..
Also really good, fast paced, smart people. I would say you have more opportunities for ownership here because it's a smaller company. Definitely worth checking out if you're interviewing.
It really depends on your team. I’ve been lucky to have designed several systems from scratch, but probably would be miserable on 75% of the teams at least. Pick good projects and if you know what you’re doing, your voice will likely be heard. You might have to argue with people including your TL though.
I'll second this. There's some teams out there that have a blank canvas to work with to solve their problems, and good management that allows them to use whatever tech they think fits best. Sadly most teams won't fall into that category, so code monkey life it is.
What has been your approach towards picking projects at Bloomberg?
I love Bloomberg life. Yes, there are legacy systems but my manager really wants me to bring new ideas sometimes get even disruptive. We like to build our own systems in general but that isn't a norm in every group.
Code monkey...Hmm...What an attitude.
