Currently at Walmart in Arkansas nearing the first year of my professional experience.

I like my boss, WLB and the tech stack we use, but I'm getting tired of the area and average TC.

Also while my team is good and there are some outstanding people outside of my team, most of the organization doesn't strike me as top talent.

Currently waiting for my visa and should also get a promo within the next few months hopefully.

Ideally I plan on moving to Bay/NY/Austin.

Should I stay here for another year? Transfer to another office? Or just start looking already?

Should it be manageable for me to land interviews with top companies?

Move to their competitor, Albertsons. I hear it's Tier 1 for tech

This is the correct answer. If you enjoy Walmart, then you'll probably like Albertsons even more.

In all seriousness, your TC seems low. Since you're at Walmart, I'm guessing you've worked on Azure/O365. If so, look for a job in MS Sales, but after July when they're done putting heads on spikes

Yeah, I do all the cloud related stuff and then some more. The TC is definitely low compared to Bay area, but cost of living is much lower as well. If I transferred to bay, my TC would increase to ~150k. I'm a software engineer so not sure how valid is the MS Sales advice?

Have a lot of friends at tier 1 companies so will definitely ask them for referral. Thanks for the reminder.

You are asking the wrong question, B players follow & A players lead. Short answer make something, at Walmart or somewhere else. Don’t ask to get “picked” that’s a losing perspective imo. Take that as you will.

I think if you are driven by TC & location then chase TC & location.

Thanks. Location is definitely a priority, TConly to some extent since I wouldn't mind working for startup

Getting “picked” was just the feeling I got based on comments you had ie “~I should get a promo soon...” I just prefer to be chased by my opportunities & not the other way around.

Not really. I've been doing a good job and seeking out extra responsibilities so that's why I assume I'm gonna get promoted soon

I hear the culture at the Carlsbad Walmart office is great. Maybe you could transfer? As someone who lives in North County San Diego, I can tell you that it is a great place to live: nice weather, good Mexican food, good beer, laid back people and atmosphere. I love it here. Just make sure that your comp is adjusted to the increase in cost of living. We are not as insane as SF Bay Area, but it will be quite a bit higher than Arkansas, I imagine.

    Don't wait for a promo
    1) It will take you months to do the interviews already
    2) Level at new company might not depend on the promo
