Ever been in a situation where the majority of people are clearly in the moral wrong (as dictated by later hindsight, or basic morals), but you're in the minority? What's it like? Like there was a time where the majority of people thought slavery was fine, and the abolitionists were extreme fringe viewpoints. Same with legalized discrimination, Jim Crow (at least in some regions). Internment of Japanese, the times where most people were very anti gay in a basic sense (like people laughing at gays getting AIDs and not offering support). When MLK Jr died most white people hated him (see polls). See those old photos of the first black students walking into desegregated schools and the crowd of angry hecklers around them? The majority! 1990s to Early 2000s, most people were seriously against gay marriage. There was a freakout when the first state recognized that there was nothing in the Constitution or laws legally preventing same sex marriage. Recent example is 70 percent of people thinking Iraq War was a great and moral idea (now everybody acts like they were against it)... 70 percent!!! Nowadays you can find probably only 30 percent who think it was good. How do you deal with it? What does it make you think and feel about your fellow country people when it comes to things that seem like baisc moral issues (this is mostly a US focused example but interested in other country viewpoints)? And which issues now, that has majority support will make this list 30 years from now that people will pretend they weren't behind?
I think that sometimes people just like to be part of the majority. Maybe it feels like a victory or being popular or something like that. It's very easy to turn a blind eye to people who are suffering and are not part of your group. Also depends on where most people get their Information from and who controls that information. It helps to create that feeling of being left out from the rest of the majority. Currently in India, my source of information is real people on Twitter and stand up comedians who highlight issues through their work. And it's scary to see so many people calling them anti national for bringing up a civic incident.
Happening to the extreme In India right now. I think the solution is for people who feel they are a minority to unite. I see progressives being very opinionated and that often puts them in a conflict with one another. This is the side effect of possessing the capacity to think individually and independently. But it often weakens their collective. For example: Some Bernie supporters that ended up voting for Trump out of frustration with Hilary. Regressive people don't have much to think about and believe most of what is supplied to them. As a result, their collective is uniform and lacks diversity. As progressives in the minority, we must tolerate different valid viewpoints and unavoidable differences and reach the common minimum (concept by Kanhaiya Kumar) to grow our pool. This may not be valid for the US or maybe valid in different ways. There are also examples where minorities consist of pockets that are not progressive, and would behave in the same way as the majority if given the chance and this weakens them further. For example: Some Muslims being against gays and homosexuality. Or some Indians hating on Blacks. This is beyond stupid and must be moved away from.
I thought you were about to bring up the housing crisis of 2008.
Can you elaborate?
I think interment of the Japanese was the right thing to do. 100% in Hawaii, there were spies working against the us gov, and in the west coast there could have been issues. When you are fighting an enemy where even the common citizen is expected to fight to the death, no chances. The way their possessions and property were handled was wrong.
Seriously?! WTF??
Oh yeah, all the time! I'm bald from tearing my hair out! 😀
Majority of people have the wrong impression of Trump. Fact.
Trump's a person with self determination. I'm talking about morality in issues (e.g. Iraq War not George W).
Iraq war sentiment polling is an example of misinformation. People were told inaccurate information and they believed it because the sources were reputable.
Then why were there 30-40 percent of people opposing it pointing out it had nothing to do with 911 and predicting the quagmire? Why were they ignored?
Yeah I was against the Iraq and Afghanistan invasions - the info was there but both parties and all the media supported it so most people had no reason to doubt “experts” even if their arguments didn’t quite add up.
Yeah, I've supported Trump since 2015. Was told by friends and family he is not a serious candidate, wouldn't win, would destroy the economy, etc. Nearly every day is still a battle trying to break through the lefts racism, brainwashing attempts, and casual facism. But it continually becomes clearer that I'm the one doing the right thing and will be on the right side of history despite what others are saying.
Lol me too! Everyone who hates on him is CLEARLY in the wrong. So racist. I keep on telling my nonwhite friends how racist they are towards me!! Fascist too. Women won't talk to me anymore either but they are genetically predisposed towards being emotional rather than RATIONAL like me. They'll be shown soon and will DEFINITELY be shown to be on the wrong side of history (like whitewater, Oliver north, mccarthy). Until then my dude we just gotta lay low and watch Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro vids 👍
Trump's a person though. A person can do anything (moral or immoral it's up to them). Im talking about actual moral issues.
The majority is not sometimes but always wrong (in hindsight) yet it always believes it is right. Perhaps the majority should stop forcing his ideas on everyone else? that would be a libertarian government, and the majority dislikes that idea. Which is why it's important to have a good profession, high TC and cushy savings, so you can flee the majority when it goes berserk and move into a less violent, less ideological, less "my ideology only works if everyone follows" kind of majority. My father fled the German majority in WW2 and I fled the Stalin worshipping majority of Romania, and we both live amongst a softer majority, yet still wrong, always wrong. Try to live where they are wrong about health insurance, borders, taxes etc' and not about who should be gassed or sent to the gulag. it's not that they got it right about death camps and gulags here, they just don't have these dillemas. Seek a majority that's always wrong but less ideological about forcing the wrong on you.
You can’t make it better. But you can make it NOT worse. Freedom of speech, and protection for dissident voices, are minimum requirements. An open forum moderated by judges skilled in logic and logical fallacies, with strict requirements for quality research and statistical rigor, would be nice, however humanity has not invented such a public forum.
How old are you? Do you remember what would happen if you didn't "support the troops" in 2001 to 2005. You were attacked, ostracized, and accused of being unpatriotic
That is not freedom of speech!
