Which cities to visit for learning more about the Southern culture of the US?

I immigrated to the US 6 years ago from an Asia country, mostly living in the coastal Westcoast.

I want to learn more about the culture of the South of the US. Which city should I visit?

My goal is to gain understanding about the way of life of the people living there. It could be a week or two for the vacation.

Thanks!

No. Just want to explore different cultures.

Modern life in the Bay is monotonous. I heard life is more rural areas of the US is very family-oriented and chill.

But really, that's not what southern culture is about for the most part. I spent some of my childhood in Georgia. It's a lot of "small town" charm, but with more racism and meth. And a lot of people I grew up with hated Asians.

If you're looking for family-oriented and chill, you're maybe a little better off looking at the west/midwest rural/suburbs. But as someone else suggested, I have heard similar positive things about the rural northeast.

And not to say that rural west doesn't have racism and meth, just a little less in my experience.

Norleans is its own culture. Go there drunk or don’t go at all, and expect nothing like the rest of the south.

Stay away from shady characters in bars and definitely don’t bring anyone back to your room, lest you end up like an MSFT contractor back in the day who got voodoo sacrificed in his own room

Or just don't learn more about the south. That's a good option.

Intentionally ignoring one of the most culturally influential regions of the country seems dumb.

Is it really that influential, imparting things on the rest of the country? Or is it just socially isolated?

It is extremely influential. Many things you think of as "American" are actually southern in origin.

Charleston and Savannah are the most quintessentially southern cities left. New Orleans is kinda sorta southern but not really. Louisiana is its own thing. At least, that part of Louisiana. Definitely go to an SEC football game and get the full tailgate experience.

This is a great tip. I has never been in a football game. It must be fun and energetic 👍.

Oh right, so you must be saying the south has culture. Those are just 2 examples, but jazz and the blues sure are nice.

You ever shot guns? Its a ton of fun. Same with driving ATVs, eating bbq and singing country music. Theres a ton of downsides to being a full on redneck (the ignorance, racism, other typical downsides of the south) but a lil' rednecking can be a lot of fun every once in awhile.

I haven't noticed less racism in the PNW compared to the south. Ditto for the northeast. Not sure why the south gets all the bad rep and everyone else gets a pass for equally bad racism. Not that there isn't a lot of racism in the south, just that there's an equal amount everywhere else. Ditto with ignorance. It's no worse than any other region.

Have you checked out the east coast? West coast tends to be more americanized, settled immigrants while east coast is new immigrants

Loving guns has nothing to with shooting a random person. Don’t be a d*ck and you should be fine.

Not Houston, really not Texas at all, New Orleans is interesting, but the road trip across the south idea above is an interesting choice

Start in Atlanta and do a road trip from there to Houston, stopping in Alabama, Mississippi, and New Orleans.
